Exciting Matchups Inside Allegacy Stadium Await: ACC Announces Football Schedule Model for 2024-30
10/30/2023 6:00:00 PM | Football
Wake Forest's primary partners for the 2024-30 scheduling cycle will be Duke and NC State. Additionally, the Demon Deacons will play North Carolina four times (2024, 2025, 2027, 2028).
CHARLOTTE – While the Demon Deacons are in the midst of the 2023 season and just two of wins away from clinching an eighth-straight bowl berth, which is the second-longest streak in the Atlantic Coast Conference, the league announced on Monday a new football scheduling model that will go into effect beginning with the 2024 season.
The new schedule will continue with no divisions, feature 17 schools and will increase the number of annual conference matchups from 56 to 68. The top two teams based on conference winning percentage will compete in the ACC Football Championship Game on the first Saturday in December at Bank of America Stadium in Charlotte, North Carolina.
The approved format will continue to have each member institution play eight conference games per season, with all 17 teams playing each other at least twice over the next seven seasons – once at home and once on the road. The current 14 conference teams will play a total of three times each in California over the seven years and none will travel west to California in back-to-back seasons.
The new scheduling model protects 16 annual matchups. Of the 16 matchups, 11 are retained from the current 3-5-5 schedule model, two are restored rivalries from the divisional format in Miami-Virginia Tech and NC State-Wake Forest and the three new schools fill the remaining three. Additionally, Wake Forest's annual rivalry matchup with Duke will continue.

What They're Saying:
- Head Coach Dave Clawson:
- "This new scheduling model will provide more balance for the conference overall, but our Wake Forest football schedule over next seven years will continue to be unique and challenging as our league becomes increasingly more competitive. Additionally, I was glad to see our historic rivalries with NC State and Duke preserved and the opportunity to compete against North Carolina four times in the next seven years as well. We are focused on getting ready for a talented Blue Devils squad on Thursday night on a short week, but today's news gives us necessary clarity as we look ahead to future years."
- Director of Athletics John Currie:
- "Today's announcement from the ACC fits right into our Wake Forest Athletics goal of offering The Best Fan Experience in North Carolina. The new model increases the frequency of games with long-time and proximate rivals like the Big Four, Virginia and Virginia Tech. This also brings a greater and more challenging variety of ACC foes along with new opponents like Cal, SMU & Stanford to Winston-Salem and Allegacy Federal Credit Union Stadium! And, with a national schedule, including trips to Atlanta, Dallas, Miami and the San Francisco Bay Area on deck, this means our Demon Deacon fans, alumni, parents and students across the country will have the opportunity to root on Wake Forest in their local DEACTOWN too.
- "Wake Forest is a national comprehensive university as our most recent freshman class hails from 45 states and 32 countries and our 2.7 millions fans nationwide represents the fastest growing brand in the Power conferences.
- "Not to be forgotten, this new model ensures that our student-athletes have the opportunity to compete against all ACC institutions over this seven-year period. Senior associate commissioner Michael Strickland and AD chair John Wildhack have done a remarkable job leading us through a complex jigsaw puzzle process that will add to the excitement of ACC football and continue our growth in attendance at Allegacy Stadium, which has hosted an average of 30,680 fans per game this season, our highest home mark since 2011. With one more opportunity to see our 2023 team in person in Winston-Salem on Nov. 11 against the Wolfpack, I look forward to seeing Deacon Nation again in just 12 days. Meanwhile, if you are in the triangle, come out and cheer on Coach Dave Clawson's squad inside Wallace Wade Stadium at Duke on Thursday night as we take on the Blue Devils in a nationally televised game at 7:30 p.m. on ESPN."
- Wake Forest Student-Athlete Advisory Council President & Redshirt Sophomore Placekicker Matthew Dennis:
- "As a Charlotte native, I am excited to play half our season next year in the state of North Carolina. Additionally, trips to Miami and Stanford will be challenging competitively and are a unique part of being a student-athlete in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Amongst my fellow athletes on our Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, we often discuss the reasons we came to Wake Forest to further our education and compete at the highest level – and today's announcement of the future football schedule brings clarity allows us as athletes and our families to plan ahead for where we will be competing in the years to come. I am grateful for the leadership of AD John Currie and the staff at the Atlantic Coast Conference for their hard work throughout this process."
- ACC Commissioner Jim Phillips, Ph.D.
- "We are extremely excited to welcome Cal, SMU and Stanford to the ACC and look forward to having them compete beginning in the fall of 2024. Throughout the entire scheduling model process, the membership was incredibly thoughtful and purposeful in building a creative, flexible and aggressive conference scheduling model while keeping the student-athlete experience at the forefront. The excitement and anticipation for our teams, alumni and fans will undoubtedly build as we look ahead to the future of this incredible conference."
