Wake Forest Men's Soccer Lands Program Record 13 on All-ACC Academic Team

Thirteen different Demon Deacons are being recognized for their academic achievements by the ACC.

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A program record 13 members of Wake Forest men's soccer were named to the 2022 All-Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Academic Team, the league office announced on Wednesday. The 13 honorees are the most in program history for a single year, surpassing the six selections in 2020 and 2021.

Garrison Tubbs, Chase Oliver, Hosei Kijima, Oscar Sears, Colin Thomas, Ryan Fessler, Bo Cummins, Vlad Walent, Cooper Flax, Babacar Niang, Samuel Jones, Takuma Suzuki and Sidney Paris all garnered the prestigious honor thanks to a combination of academic and athletic achievements during the 2022 campaign.  

For Tubbs and Suzuki, it marks the third-straight year they have been named to the All-ACC Academic Team becoming the fifth and sixth Demon Deacons in program history to earn three All-ACC Academic Team selections joining Andy Lubahn (2010-11, 13), Ian Harkes (2013-16), Jacori Hayes (2013-16) and Brad Dunwell (2015-18). Oliver, meanwhile, was also a 2021 All-ACC Academic Team selection. 

Academic requirements for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team are a 3.0-grade point average for the previous semester and a 3.0 cumulative average during one's academic career. In addition, student-athletes must compete in at least 50 percent of their team's contests to be considered for selection to the All-ACC Academic Team.

Garrison Tubbs, Junior, Finance

  • Three-time All-ACC Academic Team selection (2020-22) 

  • 2022 United Soccer Coaches First-Team Scholar All-American Selection

  • 2022 United Soccer Coaches All-South Region First-Team Selection 

  • 2022 All-ACC Second-Team Selection 

  • 2022 Team Captain 

  • 2020-21 and 2021-2022 ACC Academic Honor Roll selections

  • ACC Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 13, 2022) 

  • Recorded a team-high 1,750 minutes of action to log six points off of two goals and two assists 

  • Helped Wake Forest record eight clean sheets including four against ACC opponents

  • Both of his goals against George Mason (Sept. 20) and Wofford (Oct. 18) were game-winners

  • Also tallied assists in victories over Fairleigh Dickinson (Sept. 13) and Boston College (Oct. 15)

Chase Oliver, Junior, Economics 

  • Two-time All-ACC Academic Team selection (2021-22)

  • 2020-21 and 2021-2022 ACC Academic Honor Roll selections 

  • Appeared in 16 matches during the 2022 season, recording two goals with an assist in 349 minutes of action

  • Scored both of his goals in back-to-back 6-1 victories over George Mason and Clemson 

  • Also collected an assist against George Mason 

  • The three points against George Mason tied a career-high that was previously set against Cornell on Sept. 4, 2021

Hosei Kijima, Junior, History 

  • 2019-20 and 2021-22 ACC Academic Honor Roll selections 

  • Appeared in 10 matches with eight starts during the 2022 season, collecting three goals along with an assist 

  • All three of his goals were game-winning strikes

  • Solidified a season-opening victory over UCF on Aug. 25 with the lone goal in a 1-0 victory over the Knights 

  • Tallied a goal and an assist in a 5-1 victory over Winthrop 

  • Scored the game-winning goal in a 6-1 victory over Clemson on Sept. 24

Oscar Sears, Junior, Economics

  • 2020-21 and 2021-2022 ACC Academic Honor Roll selections

  • Appeared in 19 matches with two starts in 2022, recording six goals and three assists for 15 points 

  • Led the Demon Deacons with three game-winning goals, which came against Air Force (Aug. 28), Jacksonville (Oct. 4) and Boston College (Oct. 15)

  • Scored in back-to-back 6-1 victories over George Mason and Clemson 

  • Collected assists in victories over UCF, Fairleigh Dickinson and George Mason 

Colin Thomas, Junior, Communication

  • 2020-21 ACC Academic Honor Roll selection 

  • Appeared in all 20 matches and earned 18 starts during the 2022 campaign

  • Played a career-high 1,075 minutes 

  • Collected eight points off of four assists and two goals 

  • Scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 victory at Virginia Tech on Sept 16

  • Also notched a goal and an assist in 3-1 victory over Boston College 

  • Went on a three-match streak of a goal contribution in victories over Fairleigh Dickinson (Sept. 13), Virginia Tech (Sept. 16) and George Mason (Sept. 20)

Ryan Fessler, Sophomore, Undeclared

  • 2020-21 and 2021-2022 ACC Academic Honor Roll selections

  • Appeared in all 20 matches with 12 starts, recording five assists along with one goal in 1,140 minutes of action 

  • All five assists came in victories over NC State (Sept. 10), Fairleigh Dickinson (Sept. 13), Clemson (Sept. 24) and Boston College (Oct. 15) 

  • Recorded the first multi-assist performance of his career with two against Boston College 

  • Scored off a direct free kick against William & Mary (Oct. 11)

Bo Cummins, Sophomore, Undeclared

  • 2020-21 and 2021-2022 ACC Academic Honor Roll selections

  • Appeared in 11 matches as the Demon Deacons finished the 2022 season 14-6-0 

  • Played a season-high 35 minutes in a 5-1 victory over Winthrop on Sept. 6 

  • Made his first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance against Ohio State on Nov. 17

Vlad Walent, Freshman, Undeclared

  • Appeared in all 20 matches with 13 starts during his debut season, recording 10 points off of four assists and three goals 

  • Named to the ACC All-Freshman Team 

  • Played 877 minutes 

  • Started his collegiate debut in a 1-0 victory over UCF on Aug. 25 

  • Scored his first career goal in a 2-1 victory over Air Force on Aug. 28

  • Also scored in ACC victories against Clemson (Sept. 24) and Boston College (Oct. 15) 

  • Recorded an assist in three-straight matches against Fairleigh Dickinson (Sept. 13), Virginia Tech (Sept. 16) and George Mason (Sept. 20) 

  • Also collected an assist in a 3-0 victory over Wofford on Oct. 18

Samuel Jones, Freshman, Undeclared

  • Appeared in 12 matches with one start during his debut season, recording 168 minutes of action 

  • Made his collegiate debut in Wake Forest's 2-0 victory over UAB on Sept. 3

  • Earned his first career start against George Mason in a 6-1 victory on Sept. 20

  • Made his first NCAA Tournament appearance against Ohio State on Nov. 17

Babacar Niang, Sophomore, Undeclared

  • 2021-22 ACC Academic Honor Roll selection 

  • Appeared in 18 matches with 13 starts, collecting four goals and two assists

  • Earned third-team All-ACC honors 

  • Made an immediate impact in his season debut in a 2-0 victory over UAB, recording a goal and an assist 

  • Earned the first of 13-straight starts in a 6-1 victory over George Mason on Sept. 20 

  • Scored in back-to-back matches against Clemson (Sept. 24) and Duke (Oct. 1)

  • Recorded an assist on Wake Forest's lone goal in a 1-0 victory over Jacksonville on Oct. 4 

  • Scored the game-winning goal in a 3-0 victory over No. 9 Louisville on Oct. 28

Cooper Flax, Freshman, Undecided 

  • Appeared in 15 matches with 12 starts during his debut season with the Demon Deacons, recording five assists and a goal 

  • Named to the ACC All-Freshman Team 

  • Started his collegiate debut in a 1-0 victory over UCF on Aug. 25 

  • Recorded assists in victories over Air Force (Aug. 28), Winthrop (Sept. 6), Virginia Tech (Sept. 16), Clemson (Sept. 24) and Louisville (Oct. 28) 

  • First career goal secured a 3-2 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson on Sept. 13 

  • Finished the season with 678 minutes of action

Sidney Paris, Junior, Communication 

  • Naval Academy's Commandant's List (2021)

  • Appeared in 19 matches during his debut season with the Demon Deacons, logging 393 minutes of action 

  • Played 24 minutes in his Wake Forest debut in a 1-0 victory over UCF on Aug. 25 

  • Recorded four assists, all coming victories for the Deacs 

  • Collected two assists in Wake Forest's 6-1 victory over Clemson on Sept. 24

Takuma Suzuki, Senior, Business & Enterprise Management  

  • Three-time All-ACC Academic Team selection (2020-22) 

  • Three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection (2019-22) 

  • One of five Demon Deacons to start all 20 matches, Suzuki recorded 1,455 minutes of action and recorded two assists 

  • Was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team 

  • Helped Wake Forest record eight clean sheets while outscoring opponents 42-20 

  • Played all 90 minutes in a 1-0 victory over Virginia Tech in the quarterfinals of the ACC Tournament 

  • Assists came against Wofford (Oct. 18) and No. 9 Louisville (Oct. 28)
