Deacs Scrimmage for First Time in Spring Camp
3/26/2023 11:59:00 AM | Football
For the first time this spring, the Demon Deacons went live at the conclusion of Saturday afternoon’s practice.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The Wake Forest football team wrapped up the second week of spring camp Saturday with the first scrimmage and live tackling at the Doc Martin Practice Fields.
Before the scrimmage on Saturday, the Demon Deacons practiced over at Truist Field for the first time. It was also the first time many on the team had seen the new turf since being installed a little over a month ago:
The Deacs continued to grow as a unit as the Deacs took Friday afternoon to get in plenty of situational work. The offense and defense had periods to practice on third-down, red zone and other unique situations.
With plenty of guys in new or expanded roles this season, this was an opportunity to familiarize players with their part in the offense or defense:
On Saturday, both the offense and defense took turns making plays with the afternoon being highlighted by a 63-yard connection from redshirt sophomore quarterback Mitch Griffis to redshirt freshman wide receiver Wesley Grimes.
A few drives later, senior defensive back Chelen Garnes made a game-changing play for the defense, intercepting a pass and returning it for a defensive score:
With Pro Day Wednesday, the Demon Deacons saw a familiar faces return to the practice field this week with both as linebacker Ryan Smenda and defensive line Kobie Turner visiting practice:
Turner, Smenda and nine other Demon Deacon football alumni will take the field one more time on Wednesday for the annual Pro Day as the Deacs show off their skills in front of NFL organizations. Pro Day will be broadcast live on ACC Network Extra.
Be sure to tune in and support your Deacs.
Wake Forest continues to build up towards the April 15th spring game which will be the culmination of 15 spring practices. Be sure to come out and support the Deacs and get your first look at the 2023 team:
