Deacs Lead Calusa Cup After 18 Holes

4/2/2023 8:47:00 PM | Men's Golf

Led by two impressive rounds from junior Michael Brennan and sophomore Scotty Kennon, the Demon Deacons hold a three-shot lead over a field that includes four of the top five teams in the nation.

NAPLES, Fla. – With the help of four rounds of even par or better, the Wake Forest men's golf team leads the elite field at the Calusa Cup through 18 holes of play.

The Demon Deacons were led by two big rounds from junior Michael Brennan and sophomore Scotty Kennon Sunday afternoon. After one round, Wake Forest is 7-under-par and three strokes ahead of the next closest team, No. 3 North Carolina. Additionally, the Deacs sit 11 strokes ahead of No. 5 Arizona State, 12 strokes ahead of No. 2 Texas Tech and 13 strokes ahead of No. 1 Vanderbilt.

Kennon started the Deacs off with a strong effort on the front nine. By the turn, he was 2-under-par and was the highest Wake Forest player on the individual leaderboard for much of the day. He was bogey free on the back nine and found another birdie on the par-4 15th, posting a strong 69 (-3) for the Deacs.

Brennan helped bring the Demon Deacons big round home. He went into the turn 1-over-par, but was flawless on the back nine. Brennan found all four of his birdies including three birdies over the last five holes.

Both Brennan and Kennon are currently tied for second and one stroke off the individual lead. Joining them in the top 10 are freshman Andrew McLauchlan and sophomore Marshall Meisel. McLauchlan is tied for seventh at 1-under while Meisel is even par and tied for 10th.

For the second-consecutive round, the Deacs carded one of their best five rounds of the season. This includes the Third Round at Battle at Briar's Creek where Wake Forest fought back from eight strokes down going into the final day to pull ahead and win by nine stokes, a 17-stroke difference:

From Coach Haas:

"16 birdies and only nine bogies of the counting scores today. We put the ball in good places and scored it. This shows what this team can do when calm and in control. Go Deacs!" - Head Coach Jerry Haas
