Wake Forest Men's Soccer Announces 2022-23 Team Awards

To complete another accolade-filled season, Wake Forest men’s soccer has announced the winners of the team’s Most Valuable Player and Most Improved Player awards and the Walt Chyzowych Award for Leadership and Character.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest men's soccer has announced the winners of the team's end-of-year awards for the 2022-23 academic year, as selected by members of the team. 

Junior Prince Amponsah was selected as the team's Most Valuable Player, as the Bronx, N.Y., native earned All-ACC Third-Team honors and was selected to the ACC All-Tournament Team. 

Freshman goalkeeper Devin Armstrong was named the team's Most Improved Player, as he was a valuable member to the goalkeeper room in his first season in Winston-Salem. 

Junior Garrison Tubbs earned the renowned Walt Chyzowych Award for Leadership and Character. On the field, Tubbs served as team captain en route to All-ACC Second-Team and United Soccer Coaches All-South Region First-Team honors. Additionally, he was named a United Soccer Coaches First-Team Scholar All-American. 

Last fall, Wake Forest earned a 12th-straight berth into the NCAA Men's Soccer Championship, extending the best mark in the ACC by eight years. The Deacs won 14 matches including top-10 regular season victories over Clemson (6-1 on Sept. 24) and Louisville (3-0 on Oct. 28). 

Prince Amponsah | Most Valuable Player 

  • Started all 19 of his appearances to help lead the Demon Deacons to eight clean sheets including four over ACC opponents 

  • Earned All-ACC third-team and ACC All-Tournament Team honors 

  • Played 1,656 minutes, third-most on the team 

  • Went the full 90 minutes 12 times 

  • Recorded an assist in Wake Forest's 2-1 victory over Air Force (Aug. 28) 

  • Was named ACC Defensive Player of the Week (Sept. 6) following a 2-0 victory over UAB in which the Demon Deacons did not allow a shot on goal

Devin Armstrong | Most Improved Player 

  •  Joined the Demon Deacons for the 2022 season as part of the No. 2 nationally-ranked recruit class

  • Served in a valuable role on and off the field alongside fellow goalkeepers Trace Alphin and Cole McNally 

  • Made multiple appearances in the team's spring matches, including recording six saves to preserve a clean sheet against Clemson in the Spring Soccer Cup Finals 

Garrison Tubbs | Walt Chyzowych Award for Leadership and Character

  • One of five Demon Deacons to start all 20 minutes during the 2022 season 

  • Recorded a team-high 1,750 minutes of action to log six points off of two goals and two assists

  • Named an All-ACC second-team and United Soccer Coaches All-South Region first-team selection

  • In December, was named a United Soccer Coaches First-Team Scholar All-American, becoming the sixth Demon Deacon to be named an Academic All-American 

  • Was selected as the team captain prior to the start of the season

  • Helped Wake Forest record eight clean sheets including four against ACC opponents 

  • Both of his goals against George Mason (Sept. 20) and Wofford (Oct. 18) were game-winners 

  • Also tallied assists in victories over Fairleigh Dickinson (Sept. 13) and Boston College (Oct. 15)
