Deacs Shoot 7-Under-Par to Move Up Leaderboard

5/16/2023 10:15:00 PM | Men's Golf

Wake Forest had all five players finish even par or better, moving up on the leaderboard and getting closer to the cutline.

NORMAN, Okla. -- In the second round of the NCAA Regional in Norman, Okla., the Wake Forest men's golf team rose up the leaderboard with the help of a 7-under-par round.

Overall, the Demon Deacons were 13 strokes better from their opening round and were one stroke shy of the best round on the course. The round helped the Deacs move up two spots as they now are in ninth as a team and gained one stroke on the cutline.

Wake Forest had all five of its players finish par or better Tuesday with three players finishing below par. Senior Mark Power paced the Deacs as the first player on the course. He got off to a hot start with birdies on two of the first four holes and remained 2-under-par or better for the remainder of the day.

Power nearly went bogey free for the entire day with his only blemish coming on the par-4 17th hole. Only three other players in the field had a better score than the senior from Kilkenny, Ireland as he finished with a 68 (-4), elevating himself 22 spots on the individual leaderboard.

Right behind him on the course freshman Andrew McLauchlan put together a great round of his own. Like Power, McLauchlan tallied two birdies in the opening four holes and then entered the turn at even par. He found two more birdies on the back nine to finish 2-under-par.

Sophomore Scotty Kennon was the third Deacon to end the day in the red numbers. He was under par for much of his round after a birdie right before the turn put him under par.

For the final round of stroke play, the Demon Deacons will tee off Wednesday with LSU (-4) and Ole Miss (-3), with the first tee time set for 9:55 a.m. off No. 1.

From Coach Haas

"We played much better than we did yesterday and are playing better each and every nine holes that we play. We probably left a couple of shots out there today and will need another great round tomorrow. We will be off the first tee which is always better to start on that nine. Go Deacs!" - Head Coach Jerry Haas
