WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest football redshirt junior offensive lineman Michael Jurgens was named as a semifinalist for the 2023 William V. Campbell Trophy, as announced by the National Football Foundation on Wednesday.
Since 2016, the Demon Deacons have had six semifinalists for the award, including Ryan Javion who was a finalist for the Campbell Trophy in 2016. Additionally, Jurgens is the first two-time Campbell Trophy semifinalist in program history.
Jurgens entered the 2022 season at Wake Forest as a three-time captain already having anchored an offensive line that has paved the way to the seven-straight bowl appearances, the Atlantic Coast Conference's second-longest active streak.
Jurgens earned a school record-breaking sixth honor for being on the ACC Academic Honor roll earlier this summer. He is also a two-time member of the All-ACC Academic Team and was a 2022 William V. Campbell Trophy Semifinalist.
After graduating Magna Cum Laude while also earning a place on the Dean's List on three different occasions during his undergraduate career, he finished his Masters of Business, becoming just the second Wake Forest football student-athlete to do so in the MBA program, joining Eric Osteen.
He is currently pursuing a Project Management - Certificate which is one of the hardest certificate programs on campus and is expected to obtain the certificate by the end of 2023 fall semester.
In his first year as a captain, the Demon Deacons finished with a historic 11-win season en route to the ACC Atlantic Division and Gator Bowl titles in 2021. The 11 wins tie the most in program history and the Gator Bowl victory is the second bowl title since Jurgens has been on campus as the Deacs also won the 2018 Birmingham Bowl during his freshman campaign. Overall, the Demon Deacons have been to a bowl game during all four years that Jurgens has been on campus and six years in a row overall. During the 2021 season, Wake Forest finished the season ranked No. 14 in the Coaches' Poll, No. 15 in the AP Poll and No. 17 in the College Football Playoff Poll. Additionally with Jurgens leadership up front, the Demon Deacons got off to its best start in program history, beginning the year with an 8-0 record. This eight-game winning streak is also the longest in program history.
In 2022, Wake Forest won its third bowl game since Jurgens arrival, defeating Missouri in the Gasparilla Bowl. The Demon Deacons rose to as high as No. 10 in the AP Poll rankings for the second-straight year.
He has started 38 career games with 34 coming at the center position and all four this season coming at left guard. Over the previous three seasons at Wake Forest, Jurgens played 2,541 snaps, the most out of any returning player for the Deacs.
Off the field and outside of the classroom, Jurgens has participated in 14 different service commitments in his time at Wake Forest, totaling nearly 22 hours on campus and in the Winston-Salem community. Some of these community service acts include Drop Everything and Read (D.E.A.R), Freedom School, Juneteenth Annual Kickball Tournament, Wake Forest Victory Day, Down Syndrome Association of Greater Winston Salem among others.
Jurgens is one of 201 semifinalists for the Campbell Trophy and the NFF will announce 12-15 finalists on Oct. 25, and each of the finalists will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2023 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments.
