Wake Forest Battles Wofford to Scoreless Draw

10/8/2024 9:23:00 PM | Men's Soccer

The Demon Deacons recorded their third straight clean sheet to wrap up their home non-conference schedule.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Wake Forest men's soccer finished off their home non-conference schedule on Tuesday night, as the Demon Deacons (5-3-4, 2-1-1 ACC) and the visiting Wofford Terriers (4-2-2, 0-0-0 SoCon) battled to a 0-0 draw.

Wake Forest recorded a majority of the shots Tuesday night with an 18-to-12 advantage in addition to a 9-to-2 edge in corners. The Deacs also held 52 percent of the possession against the Terriers.

Senior goalkeeper Trace Alphin logged three saves en route to his fourth clean sheet of the season. Additionally, Alphin and the Deacs have not conceded a first half goal in their last five matches.

It was Wake Forest's third-consecutive clean sheet, marking the first time the Deacs have gone three-straight matches without conceding since the 2023 ACC Atlantic Division Championship side went four matches without conceding from Sept. 29-Oct. 14 last season.

Wake Forest will return to ACC action on Saturday night, renewing a Big Four series with No. 16 Duke at Koskinen Stadium.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the match will stream on ACC Network Extra.

Spry Homefield Advantage
With the result on Tuesday night, Wake Forest over the last four years is now 21-3-3 against non-conference opponents in regular season action at Spry Stadium. During this stretch, Wake Forest has outscored opponents by a +50 margin and recorded 11 clean sheets.

Alphin Enters Strong Company
Making his 67th career appearance for the Demon Deacons dating back to his freshman campaign in 2021, senior goalkeeper Trace Alphin now ranks third in program history in career minutes behind only 2007 National Champions Brian Edwards (2004-07) and Akira Fitzgerald (2007-10).

Surpassing the 1,000-minute mark in Tuesday's match, Alphin has now logged 5,938 minutes in goal for the Deacs.

How It Happened
  • After back-and-forth possession in the early stages, sophomore Jeffrey White logged Wake Forest's first shot of the night in the 27th minute. Junior Basit Umar also collected a 27th-minute attempt that was blocked.
  • Wofford would hit the crossbar in the 38th minute, beating an outstretched Trace Alphin, but the Deacs avoided conceding the opening goal.
  • The Deacs nearly broke open the scoring in the final seconds of the first half, as junior Cooper Flax lofted a ball over the Wofford backline to find freshman Dylan Borso alone. His one-on-one with the Terriers' goalkeeper would be saved.
    • It was the only shot on goal for either side in the half.
  • Alphin recorded his first save of the evening in the 46th minute, hauling in a deflected ball inside the Deacs' 18.
  • Wake Forest earned three-straight corner kicks between the 50th and 52nd minutes but were unable to break open the tie.
  • The Deacs continued to press and create their chances, including back-to-back attempts from senior Julian Kennedy and Flax along with a pair of shots off corner kicks from  sophomore Jose Perez
    • In total, Wake Forest registered nine shots and five corner kicks in the first 15 minutes of the second half.
  • Freshman Pariss Mitchell had a prime opportunity to put the Deacs up in the 88th minute, but his shot on target was knocked away by a diving Terrier keeper.
  • Graduate Prince Amponsah blocked a shot with 30 seconds left in the contest and secured the 0-0 draw.

Demon Deacon Details of Note
  • Graduate Prince Amponsah earned his 73rd career start, tying him with Scott Sealy (2001-04) for the 27th-most in program history.
  • Freshman Daniel Krueger earned his 10th career start.
  • Graduate Sidney Paris made his 65th career appearance.
  • This marked the first time this season that Wake Forest utilized the same Starting XI in back-to-back matches.
  • Wake Forest remains unbeaten against Wofford all-time, sporting a 5-0-1 record against the Terriers.

From Coach Muuss
"I thought Wofford was a very good side. They were one of the better teams we have played all year with the way they moved the ball, and I give Joel [Tyson] and his coaching staff a lot of credit because they play really good football. It was an enjoyable game, but it was also a frustrating game. As much as I give credit to Wofford, we have to find a way to win that game and put ourselves in the category of the side we want to be this year. We got out of it healthy and we got a clean sheet. We were without two more guys today, so that was a little bit of a disadvantage in the midweek game. We generated a lot of chances. They blocked a couple shots off the line and their keeper made a couple of good saves. Now we have to rebound and find a way to beat Duke."

Up Next

Wake Forest will play its fifth of eight ACC regular season matches on Saturday night, facing No. 16 Duke in Durham.

Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m. and will be streamed on ACC Network Extra.
