CARY BOUND: Demon Deacons Earn First-Round Bye in ACC Tournament

11/1/2024 8:00:00 AM | Women's Soccer

Wake Forest’s second-place conference finish is tied for the highest in program history.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Following one of the most successful and accomplished regular seasons in program history, the No. 3-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team has clinched an ACC Tournament berth for the second-consecutive season and earned a first-round bye.

The Demon Deacons will return to action next Thursday, Nov. 7 at either 5:30 p.m. or 8 p.m. in the ACC semifinals against the winner of No. 6-seeded Notre Dame at No. 3-seeded Florida State. That match is slated for 8 p.m. Sunday evening on ACC Network.

The first-round bye was clinched following a critical 3-0 victory over Big Four rival NC State.

"I'm proud of our performance tonight," Wake Forest women's soccer head coach Tony da Luz said. "We scored in the first minute showing we were ready to play. Our body of work in the ACC regular season has been impressive and consistently high. We are a true team, we play so well together and tonight was a perfect example of our teamwork. We earned second place in the ACC and a critical bye through to the semifinals. We deserved it!"

This season has already seen plenty of success for the Demon Deacons, as the squad has recently been ranked as high as No. 2 in the country, the highest ranking in program history. This comes after four-ranked wins on the year, including Wake Forest's first-ever win over a No. 1-ranked team on Sept. 19 with a 1-0 victory against Stanford.

The Deacs also became the first team in NCAA history to take down a No. 1-ranked team and a No. 2-ranked team in back-to-back matches after downing No. 2 Virginia in Charlottesville on Sept. 15.

All of this has helped the Demon Deacons finish second in the ACC standings for just the second time with a program-record seven ACC wins and 22 points.

Both semifinal matches as well as the final will be played at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. Tickets can be purchased here. For those unable to attend, both semifinal matches will be broadcast live on ACC Network with the championship match showing on ESPNU at noon on Sunday, Nov. 10.
