John Hayes Named Southeast Region Coach of the Year

After leading the Wake Forest men’s cross country program to their sixth ACC Championship and 58th overall for Wake Forest Athletics, Hayes earned Regional Coach of the Year honors.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- Wake Forest Director of Track and Field and Cross Country John Hayes has been named the 2024 Southeast Regional Coach of the Year, the USTFCCCA announced on Tuesday. This marks the fourth time in the past five years that Hayes has received this distinguished honor.
During the 2024 campaign and his ninth year as head coach, Hayes led the Demon Deacons to a seventh place finish at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Championships after entering as the No. 14 ranked team in the nation.
In November, the Deacs' claimed the 2024 Atlantic Coast Conference Championship, marking the program's sixth championship and the 58th ACC Championship overall for Wake Forest Athletics and Hayes's second championship in three years.
This fall, Hayes guided an All-American performance for sophomore Charlie Sprott, as he became the seventh Demon Deacon to earn All-American honors with an impressive 32nd-place finish, recording a personal-best time of 29:21.6 at the NCAA Championships.
Additionally, senior Luke Tewalt earned his second ACC Championship victory in just three years, along with his third All-ACC and second All-Regional honors.
Junior Joe O'Brien earned his second All-ACC selection and first All-Regional award. Sprott was also awarded with All-ACC and All-Regional, along with All-ACC selection Aidan Ross.
The Demon Deacons placed third at the Nuttycombe Invitational on Sept. 27, highlighted by sophomore Rocky Hansen's second place finish with a career-best time of 23:06.9. The squad finished their regular-season, winning the Panorama Farms Invitational with 38 points.
