Cameron Hildreth: My Wake Forest Story
3/18/2024 7:05:00 AM | Men's Basketball
Coming to play basketball in the United States has been a dream come true for me. Being from England and growing up playing basketball, I played a different style of the game. Basketball at home is a little slower pace but maybe more physical. It's played so fast here so I did have to adjust to it.
It was difficult to be away from my family, in a different time zone — I had to adjust to a lot of new things, not just basketball. I knew I was living out my dream, so I was excited to be here.
During the past three years, I've made lifelong friends and built great relationships with my teammates.
Playing with guys like Jake, who I still talk to all the time, and Alondes and Daivien, I also just talked to Ty the other day, and Dallas and Khadim have helped me stay confident and know what it takes to get to the next level. As teammates and friends, we're always supporting each other. The relationships I have with my teammates will last long after basketball is over. Every team I've been on here has had amazing chemistry. Since we got the Chris Paul Family Clubhouse, we are all always chilling there, playing games, playing pool, having tournaments and stuff. It helps a lot with team bonding off the court.
I ultimately chose Wake Forest because of the coaching staff. I had a great relationship with Coach Savage; he was the main guy recruiting me and we have stayed close even though he's at ETSU now. Wake Forest is a very safe school; it's a small campus with a really good sense of community so my family felt safe sending me here. Because of COVID we couldn't visit so when my parents dropped me off it was all our first times seeing the campus in real life. It has lived up to everything me and my family thought it would be.
The staff here at Wake Forest has helped me develop as a player a lot. They challenge me and the whole team in practice every day to be better than we were the day before. We work on the things we're good at to be better at them, but we also work on the things we're not good at so we can continue to improve in every way. Coach Demetris will spend 40 minutes to an hour every day after practice doing extra shooting drills with me and some other guys. They're just really supportive and want to see us get better all the way around.
All the resources here outside basketball have also helped me grow as a person. Jane Caldwell in Athletics, Lee Stowers in Nutrition, Coach Starke in the weight room, they all help me off the court in different ways that help my schoolwork and health habits. My time management between class, tutoring, workouts and practice has gotten so much better since my freshman year.
The Wake Forest community has welcomed me with open arms ever since I arrived here as a freshman. It has been great getting to know all types of people on campus and making new friendships. Wake Forest has everything you could look for in a university and is one of the best decisions I've made.
