The Demon Deacons’ 2024 schedule features seven matchups with top-40 RPI teams from last year including early non-conference meetings with VCU and UCF.

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest men's soccer has announced a highly competitive 2024 schedule, including home ACC matches against Virginia, Boston College, Virginia Tech and NC State along with opening weekend home action against VCU and Central Arkansas.

The Deacs' road schedule features matches against 2023 No. 1 nationally ranked UCF, back-to-back contests against the last three NCAA National Championship teams in Clemson and Syracuse, highly ranked foes in Duke and SMU along with a late season road matchup with annual CAA contenter UNCW.

This year's schedule features seven opponents who were top-40 in RPI during the 2023 season.

"Each year, our goal is to construct one of the toughest schedules in the country and we feel the blend of our non-conference opponents who are contenders in their conferences along with the ACC slate will prepare our squad for what we hope is another deep postseason run," said head coach Bobby Muuss. "Our success starts with the incredible home field advantage created by Deacon Nation at Spry Stadium, as we're the only program with more than 100 home wins since the start of the 2015 season. We want this year to be special and can't wait to see you again at Spry this fall cheering on the Deacs."

For the second time in four seasons, the Demon Deacons will open the campaign with a home match against VCU (Aug. 22). Earning a fifth winning season in the last seven years, the Rams in 2023 earned a top-35 RPI. The opening weekend will conclude with the Deacs' first-ever matchup against Central Arkansas (Aug. 25).

Wake Forest's first road match of the season will take place against perennial power UCF on Saturday, Aug. 31. Last season, the Golden Knights earned the school's first-ever national No. 1 ranking and the program's fourth NCAA Tournament appearance in six years. This matchup will mark the fifth all-time appearance between the two programs and first in Orlando, as Wake Forest holds a 4-0-0 advantage in the series.

The Demon Deacons will remain on the road the following Friday (Sept. 6) to take on Gardner-Webb for the second-consecutive season. Wake Forest holds a 3-0-0 record against the Runnin' Bulldogs after scoring a 4-0 victory during the 2023 campaign.

A three-match homestand will begin on Monday, Sept. 9, as the Demon Deacons will host Radford at Spry in the Highlanders' first appearance in Winston-Salem since the 1999 season.

ACC play will begin on Friday, Sept. 13 as the Deacs face Virginia in the 63rd all-time meeting between the two sides. Wake Forest has defeated Virginia three times in the Muuss Era including a 3-0 victory in the first round of the 2021 ACC Tournament.

A matchup with intrastate foe Elon (Sept. 17) will be the program's second-annual Mental Health Awareness Match, as the Deacs will wear special green jerseys that will be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting those in need. In 2023, the team raised a total of $5,289 from the inaugural Mental Health Awareness Match.

The Demon Deacons will close out the month of September with a pair of road contests against the last three National Champions, first facing Clemson at Historic Riggs Field on Friday, Sept. 20, before traveling to New York to face Syracuse on Friday, Sept. 27.

Continuing a long standing rivalry dating back to Wake Forest's inaugural season in 1980, Wake Forest and Clemson will share the pitch for the 56th time. In the Deacs' last appearance in Historic Riggs Field in 2022, Wake Forest scored the largest victory by either program in the all-time series with a 6-1 result.

The following Friday's tilt against the Orange will be the 12th all-time meeting with Syracuse, as Wake Forest will be seeking its first win at SU Soccer Stadium.

Three-straight home matches will kick off October's action, first with a mid-week showdown with ETSU (Oct. 1) before matches against Boston College (Oct. 5) and Wofford (Oct. 8).

The match with ETSU will mark the third-ever contest against the SoCon program, as the Deacs' most recent matchup with the Buccaneers came on Aug. 26, 2018 in a 4-2 victory at Spry.

The game against Boston College will serve as the program's annual Alumni Weekend, as Wake Forest will be seeking a sixth-straight home victory over the Eagles dating back to a 4-1 decision on Oct. 17, 2014.

The Deacs will remain at Spry Stadium to host Wofford for a third-straight season before a pair of road matches inside the state, first facing Duke (Oct. 12) before the final non-conference test of the regular season at UNCW (Oct. 15). The showdown with the Blue Devils will mark the Deacs' first appearance at Koskinen Stadium since the 2021 ACC Tournament and the trip across the state against the Seahawks will be Wake Forest's first match at UNCW Stadium since Sept. 20, 2000.

Wake Forest's final home match in the month of October will be against Virginia Tech in the program's annual Genna Wiley Memorial Match. The wife of former men's soccer athletic trainer Steve Wiley, Genna passed away after a long battle with breast cancer three days after Wake Forest won the 2007 NCAA National Championship.

A first-ever meeting with SMU will take place on Oct. 26 before the Demon Deacons complete the 2024 regular season at Spry with a Big Four showdown against NC State. The Deacs hold a 33-11-7 advantage in the all-time series against the Wolfpack and are 18-4-2 in matches played in Winston-Salem.
