Plus, a Demon Deacon signs with a club for the inaugural USL Super League season.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The 2024 NWSL campaign is a little over halfway through and multiple Demon Deacons have been making their presence felt across the league. Here's a look at how our #ProDeacs are performing.
Stengel Reaches 100 Career Games
Last week, Wake Forest alum Katie Stengel made her 100th career NWSL appearance in a 2-0 victory over Racing Louisville. In the following match, she helped set up the opening goal in a 2-1 win against the San Diego Wave, as she won the ball near midfield and played it to teammate Rose Lavelle, who scored in the dying minutes of the first half. It marked her first regular season assist since Oct. 12, 2019.
Stengel's efforts helped Gotham FC extend its unbeaten streak to nine matches, tying a club record. Additionally, five-consecutive wins was the second-best streak in club history and was one shy of the record set in 2014-15. Both streaks came to an end Sunday night as the club fell, 2-0, to the Washington Spirit.
Kingsbury Comes Up Big
Aubrey Kingsbury has recorded clean sheets in two of her last three outings for the Washington Spirit and has helped the club go unbeaten for six-consecutive games. She saved a 90th-minute penalty from Stengel on Sunday night in the 2-0 victory over Gotham FC. It was her seventh-career penalty save, which ranks as the third-most in NWSL history.
Washington currently sits third in the table with 31 points through 14 games, the best start in club history. Kingsbury has started all 14 matches so far this season and has recorded 38 saves and three clean sheets.
DeMarco Signs with Carolina Ascent FC
Outside of the NWSL, Giovanna DeMarco recently signed a contract with USL Super League side Carolina Ascent FC for the first-ever season of the competition. The inaugural match is scheduled for August 17th.
With the Demon Deacons, DeMarco was a standout midfielder and accumulated 29 career points with 11 goals and seven assists over 74 appearances. She also served as a captain for her final three seasons in the Old Gold & Black.
