8/14/2024 12:00:00 PM | Men's Golf

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Wake Forest men's golf team has unveiled their 11-event 2024-25 schedule, including five events slated in the fall and six in the spring.

Their schedule also features an international tournament, hosted by the Demon Deacons with the inaugural Lyon's Links Collegiate Invitational in Dublin, Ireland from September 18-20.

The Fall Schedule

The fall slate is in full swing on September 9th with the Inverness Intercollegiate made up of a loaded field, including the 2024 NCAA Champions, Auburn.

Wake Forest men's golf is set to host the inaugural Lyon's Links Collegiate Invitational in Dublin, Ireland.

With Wake Forest as the official hosts at one of Ireland's most historic Championship Links, it promises to be a spectacular event. The first of its kind event featuring five-man teams, but facilitates colleges to bring additional players to compete individually. This is the first known collegiate event on Irish soil as the experience brings the college game to the original roots of the game.

The Deacs annual trip to Texas for the Ben Hogan Collegiate Invitational will take place from September 30-October 1. One of the premier courses in the nation, Colonial Country Club has hosted an annual PGA Tour event since 1946 with the Charles Schwab Challenge contested every May. The course has also hosted a U.S. Open.

The Deacs will head up the coast to one of the top courses in New York, the Maidstone Club, for the sixth annual Hamptons Intercollegiate from October 7-8.

The final tournament of the fall slate will be the Furman Invitational starting October 19th. This is the first time in 32 years that the Deacs will play in the Furman Invitational, and will give the Deacs one final opportunity to compete in the fall.

The Spring Schedule

The Deacs tee up their spring slate at a familiar tournament, the Battle at Brier's Creek, starting February 3rd. In their last go around at the Battle at Brier's Creek in 2023, the Deacs claimed the team title shooting 13-under-par. Mark Power also claimed the individual title, finishing the tournament in first place.

The Genesis Collegiate Showcase at historic Riviera Country Club is one of the more special events of the season with a select number of Demon Deacons fighting for both team and individual honors on February 10th. The winner of the event will earn an exemption to the Genesis Scottish Open. The tournament will be an exciting format of three college-affiliated supporters and one college player per group.

In March, the Demon Deacons will travel to South Carolina for The Colleton River Collegiate (March 3-4)  and The General James Hackler Championship (March 16-18) for old and new events and opportunities.

Two mainstays of the Wake Forest schedule conclude the spring season with the Valspar Intercollegiate and the Calusa Cup. Both tournaments will include competitive and prominent fields to help the Deacs get ready for postseason play.

The Valspar will take place at the Floridian National Golf Club in Palm City, Fla. from March 24-25 while the Calusa Cup will be held at Calusa Pines Golf Club in Naples, Fla. from April 6-8, 2024.

The Postseason

The ACC Championship will be contested in Kentucky this year, as the Deacs will compete against their conference foes at The Club at Olde Stone. The tournament will begin on April 24th and the final championship match will be on April 28th.

NCAA Regional play will run from May 12-14. Regional sites include Amherst, Virginia (Poplar Grove Golf Course), Bremerton, Washington (Gold Mountain Golf Club), Fayetteville, Arkansas (The Blessings Golf Club), Reno, Nevada (Montreux Golf and Country Club), Stillwater, Oklahoma (Karsten Creek Golf Club) and Tallahassee, Florida (Seminole Legacy Golf Club).

The NCAA Championships will be back at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa in Carlsbad, Calif. from May 23-28.

About Wake Forest Men's Golf

During their 2024 campaign, the Wake Forest men's golf team made their 48th NCAA Championship appearance, which marks the most appearances in ACC history and are tied for the 10th most in NCAA history.

This marked the 13th NCAA Championship appearance under the direction of head coach Jerry Haas including the fourth in the last five years. The Deacs have finished inside of the top 10 four times under Haas' direction including making match play during the 2019 NCAA Championship and finishing tied for third in 2006.

Additionally, the Deacs made their 25th consecutive NCAA Regional appearance at the 2024 Austin Regional, finishing in fifth place.

Over the course of the 2024 season, the Deacs claimed thirteen top-10 finishes and five top-3 finishes.

In the fall, the Deacs claimed the team title at the Highlands Invitational. The Deacs shot 31-under-par as a team and tied Missouri for first place in Chicago.

Junior Scotty Kennon captured his first collegiate title at the Calusa Cup, as he set a new tournament record, shooting six-under par. Kennon tallied 14 birdies on the tournament, and he was one of just six players to finish under par in the 42-player field. Additionally, he topped the Demon Deacons on the leaderboard after every round at the Calusa Cup.

Scotty Kennon was also selected to the 2024 All-ACC Team and 2024 NCAA Division I PING All-Region Team.

In addition to on-course success, 2024 All-ACC Academic team honors were claimed by four Demon Deacons. Michael Brennan was honored by the league for the fourth consecutive year, while rising senior Collin Adams and rising sophomores Tom Haberer and Kyle Haas were honored for the first time.

Wake Forest Men's Golf Welcomes Lyons Family Men's Golf Associate Head Coach, Van Williams

In the continued effort to provide a World Class Student-Athlete Experience and help its student-athletes Win Championships, veteran Demon Deacons head coach Jerry Haas has tabbed proven winner and current Wofford men's golf head coach Van Williams as the Deacs' Lyons Family Men's Golf Associate Head Coach, as announced by Wake Forest Athletics.

"I am humbled and thankful for the opportunity Coach Haas is giving me to coach alongside of him," Williams said. "I am excited to be a part of the history and legacy of Wake Forest golf and look forward to getting to work!"

Overall, Williams has 21 years of coaching experience including the last 11 being a Division I golf head coach and assistant coach. The highlight of his coaching career came in 2016 when he helped Oregon win the NCAA Championship and the Ducks had two All-Americans, including Aaron Wise who was crowned the 2016 NCAA Individual National Champion. Additionally, he has recruited 20-plus top-100 players.

Coach Van Williams brings a unique combination of experience and has a background in the state of North Carolina that makes him an excellent fit at Wake Forest University.
