
Wake Forest Set for Penultimate Non-Conference Match Against Villanova

The Demon Deacons and Wildcats will meet for the first time since 2010.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Looking for a bounce-back performance after its first loss of the 2024 campaign, the Wake Forest women's soccer team is set to take on Villanova this Thursday, Sept. 5 at Higgins Soccer Complex.
The match is slated for 4 p.m. and will be shown live on FloSports with live stats available here.

- Junior striker Hannah Johnson enters the weekend leading Wake Forest with five points (two goals, one assist), including a goal contribution in each of the first three games of the season.
- Wake Forest has seen seven different goal scorers over the first five games of the season with eleven separate Deacs recording a goal contribution.
- The Demon Deacons are ranked No. 20 in the TopDrawerSoccer poll and are currently receiving votes in the United Soccer Coaches poll.
- Caiya Hanks and Laurel Ansbrow are both in line to make their 40th-career starts against the Wildcats.

- Ending an unbeaten streak of 27-consecutive matches against non-conference opponents in the regular season, the No. 18-ranked Wake Forest women's soccer team fell on the road to Iowa, 2-0, Sunday evening at Iowa Soccer Complex.
- Wake Forest (3-1-1) outshot Iowa (3-0-2) 10-to-8 over the 90 minutes, but was unable to find the back of the net. Senior Emily Murphy was unlucky not to have scored early on, as she fired a shot onto the crossbar in the third minute.
- The Demon Deacons and Hawkeyes split an even share of possession Sunday night.
- In defense, senior duo Laurel Ansbrow and Zara Chavoshi went the full 90 together for the fourth time this season.
- Almost exactly a year after her last collegiate appearance, Valentina Amaral entered for Payton Cahill in the 79th minute and took over in goal.
- Junior Allie Schmidt also made her first appearance of 2024.
- The loss is the first for the Demon Deacons against a non-conference opponent in the regular season since 2020. They held a 23-0-4 record in those matches.
- Villanova enters the match with a 3-2-0 record following a 2-0 defeat to No. 1-ranked Florida State on the road last weekend.
- Prior to the loss, the Wildcats picked up three-consecutive clean sheet victories over Temple (4-0), Penn (1-0) and Jacksonville (1-0).
- Of note, Temple is a common opponent between the two sides as both Wake Forest and Villanova defeated the Owls, 4-0.
- Offensively, the Wildcats are led by freshman forward Madison Shumate. She has tallied a team-best seven points so far this season, including a brace and an assist against Temple.
- She also bagged the game winner against Jacksonville.
- In goal, junior Hannah Dickinson has started all five matches so far this season and has recorded two complete clean sheets and one combined. She has also racked up 19 saves, including 10 against Florida State.
- Thursday will mark the fourth-ever meeting between the two schools and first since 2010, with Wake Forest leading the series, 2-1.
- The first meeting came in 1996 in a neutral-site clash in Piscataway, N.J. The Demon Deacons came away with a 5-1 victory over the Wildcats.
- The following year, Wake Forest earned a 2-0 shutout victory at home over Villanova.
- The last time the schools met, Villanova defeated Wake Forest, 3-2 in overtime in Blacksburg, Va.
