The Wake Forest graduate recently capped off a tremendous Demon Deacon career by captaining the program to the 2024 ACC Championship.
NEW YORK -- Following a decorated Demon Deacon career that included 2024 ACC Tournament Most Valuable Player honors and recently graduating with Wake Forest degrees in Economics and Communication, Prince Amponsah has signed a Homegrown Contract with New York City FC, the club announced on Friday.
Amponsah becomes the 13th Demon Deacon to sign a Homegrown Contract under head coach Bobby Muuss and the 16th Homegrown Contract signing in program history. The 13 Homegrown signings since 2017 are also most in the country over the last eight years.
He is also the second Wake Forest men's soccer player to sign a Homegrown contract with NYCFC, joining former teammate Nico Benalcazar.
"Wake Forest will always be home," Amponsah said. "First and foremost, I want to thank the University for arming me with an education that is truly second to none. To my coaches, teammates, teachers, faculty, The Congregation, and fans at Spry, I say thank you for the unwavering love and support every season. Because of all of you, Wake Forest means the world to me and has nurtured me into a better footballer, young man, and citizen. I will treasure these memories for life, and I am truly forever proud to be a Deac!"
"I couldn't be more happy for and proud of Prince," Muuss said. "He has come so far both on and off the field. The way he led this year's team will positively impact this program for years to come. He came to Wake as a 17-year-old boy and after giving this institution and program all he had he is leaving with a double degree in Communication and Economics, an ACC division title, an ACC title and a professional contract. In the ever-changing landscape of college athletics this is as rewarding as it gets for a coach."
In five seasons with the Demon Deacons, Amponsah appeared in 92 matches with 84 starts – both seventh-most in program history – to help extend Wake Forest's ACC-high NCAA Tournament appearances streak to 14 consecutive years.
During the 2024 season, Amponsah captained the ACC Champions as he started all 23 of his appearances to record more than 2,000 minutes of action. He was named a United Soccer Coaches Second-Team All-South Region selection and ACC Tournament MVP honors, as he tallied a career-high three assists while playing all but 11 minutes of the Deacs' seven postseason matches.
In 2023, the Bronx native appeared in 16 matches with 14 starts as he helped lead Wake Forest to a fifth ACC Atlantic Division crown in nine seasons. During the 2022 campaign, Amponsah earned All-ACC third-team honors and was named to the ACC All-Tournament Team as he started all 19 of his appearances and guided the Deacs to a No. 1 National ranking and eight clean sheets.
As a sophomore in 2021, Amponsah played a full 90 or more minutes 12 times as the Deacs recorded seven clean sheets.
After reclassifying to the class of 2020, the Bronx native appeared in 14 matches during his debut season, starting every match during the spring portion of the campaign as the Deacs advanced to the Elite Eight.
