Winston-Salem public art installation honors Paul’s legacy and lasting hometown impact.
WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- Wake Forest men's basketball legend Chris Paul was celebrated Friday as community members gathered at Rupert Bell Park for the ribbon-cutting ceremony of a new mural honoring the former Demon Deacon and 12-time NBA All-Star and his enduring connection to Winston-Salem.
The large-scale installation transforms the park's basketball courts and adjoining pavilion into a colorful tribute to Paul, a Winston-Salem native and one of the most accomplished point guards in NBA history.
Designed and painted by Miami-based artist Brian Peterson in collaboration with The Urbane Artist, the mural celebrates Paul's influence on and off the court and his continued impact on the community where his journey began. Paul was a first-team All-American while at Wake Forest before embarking on a distinguished NBA career as the predominant point guard of his generation. Throughout his time in professional basketball, he has maintained strong ties to his hometown through community initiatives and the Chris Paul Family Foundation, which supports youth, education and leadership development.
The project was funded through the Choice Neighborhood Revitalization Public Art Project in partnership with ASPIRE and the City of Winston-Salem. Community members also helped shape the project through public engagement opportunities, including participation in the artist selection process.
The completed mural provides a lasting tribute to Paul's legacy while creating an inspiring space for the next generation of young basketball players in Winston-Salem.
