Senior Jakob Melin posted a top-15 finish.
PALM CITY, Fla. – After a complete team effort and a strong final round, the Wake Forest men's golf team wrapped up play at the Valspar Collegiate Invitational at Floridian Golf Club on Tuesday.
In the final round, the Deacs posted their second team under-par round to finish tied for 11th with No. 13 Pepperdine. Wake Forest closed at 836 (-16), ahead of national powers No. 8 Arizona State and No. 24 Southern California.
Led by three rounds of par or better, Jakob Melin paced the Deacs this week. He played his final 12 holes bogey-free in the closing round, carding a 67 (-4). The senior earned his best finish of the spring, tying for 13th at nine-under.
Junior Nicholas Prieto posted back-to-back under-par rounds to open the tournament, helping the Deacs climb the leaderboard. He finished the Valspar Collegiate Invitational tied for 34th at three-under.
Posting his second under-par round of the week, junior Kyle Haas carded a final round 69 (-1) to finish tied for 49th in his third tournament of the spring at one-under par. Haas led the 83-player field in par-3 scoring, going five-under.
Junior Tom Haberer shot his best round in round three, going three-under in his final round to finish in a tie for 66th.
From Coach Haas:
"This is an NCAA caliber field. We certainly played a lot better the last couple days, finishing at 16-under was a good total. As we approach the end of the season, it is important to continue to work on scoring the ball and realize what potential we have. The Demon Deacons will always represent the Black and Gold. The Floridian and host Houston always have a great event, and this year is no exception. Go Deacs!"
