PALO ALTO, Calif. -- In a tightly-contested top-10 matchup, the No. 3 Wake Forest women's soccer team (9-1-0, 2-1-0 ACC) suffered its first loss of the season to the No. 6 Stanford Cardinal (7-2-1, ACC 1-2-0) Sunday afternoon at Laird Q. Cagan Stadium.

Despite the result today, the Demon Deacons still remain tied second at the top of the conference with six points.

Wake Forest defense's fought hard against a talented Stanford offense, as the Cardinal put up one just one shot on goal against the Deacs through 75 minutes of the game.

The teams remained square for the majority of the contest, exchanging possession into both ends. The Cardinal finally broke through in the 77th minute and doubled their advantage in the 90th minute.

The backline of Sierra Sythe, Sammi Wiemann, Tahlia Zadeyan and Taylor Maxwell went the full 90, as well as forwards Henley Tippins and Kylie Maxwell.

How It Happened

Action remained quiet through the opening stages, as the Cardinal pushed hard into the Deacs' defending end.
- Stanford recorded the first off-target attempt of the game in the 8th minute.
The Demon Deacons earned some momentum back with corner kicks in the 20th and 22nd minutes.
Wake Forest got its first good look towards the net in the 34th minute, with grad student Henley Tippins ready at the top of the box.
Redshirt-junior goalkeeper Valentina Amaral recorded her first save of the night three minutes later.
The Deacs remained drawn with the Cardinal, 0-0 at the break.
Stanford tested Amaral in the 54th minute, as the Deacs' keeper made a diving save to push the ball wide.
Senior defender Sammi Wiemann silenced multiple offensive chances, with a block and deflection out of the box
The Cardinal maintained offensive pressure on the Demon Deacons, with a blocked off-target shot in the 61st minute.
- They added another in the 63rd minute, with senior midfielder Dempsey Brown there for the block.
Stanford stayed hot in front of the box, crossing up high but redshirt-junior defender Sierra Sythe stretched to clear the chance.
In the 68th minute, sophomore forward Kylie Maxwell saw her first good chance towards the net but was wide of the goal.
The Demon Deacons got their first shot on goal of the afternoon in the 74th minute, with sophomore forward Allie Flanagan firing the ball.
Stanford took the lead in the 77th minute.
- The Cardinal extended its advantage in the 90th minute.
Wake Forest fell on the road to No. 6 Stanford, 2-0.
