Wake Forest Ranks 4th in Latest NACDA Directors' Cup Standings

Latest Standings:

Cleveland, Ohio -- Stanford University (Cal.), an eight-time champion, leads the NACDA Directors' Cup Division I fall standings with Wake Forest University in fourth place.

Wake Forest leads a strong field of Atlantic Coast Conference schools including North Carolina (8th), Maryland (11th), Duke (18th), Virginia (21st), Florida State (41st), Clemson (45th), NC State (56th) and Georgia Tech (82nd).

Stanford has scored in five sports, taking the national title in men's cross country. The Cardinal also placed second in women's cross country, men's soccer and women's volleyball; and fifth in women's soccer, to record 443 points.

Penn State moved up a spot, posting 319 points. The Nittany Lions placed second in field hockey, third in women's soccer, fifth in men's soccer, 17th in volleyball and 25th in women's cross country. They are followed by Notre Dame (Ind.), in third with 279 points; Wake Forest (N.C.), fourth with 277 points; and Michigan State, in fifth with 240 points.

These standings are based upon the completion of women and men's cross country, field hockey, I-AA football and women and men's soccer. In addition to Stanford, winning national championships were Brigham Young in women's cross country; Wake Forest in field hockey; Western Kentucky in I-AA football; Portland (Ore.) in women's soccer; UCLA in men's soccer; and Southern California in volleyball.

The NACDA Directors' Cup was developed as a joint effort between the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and USA Today. Points are awarded based on each institution's finish in up to 20 sports -- 10 women's and 10 men's. Each national champion receives 100 points.
