ACC Announces 2001 Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Scholarship Recipients, Scholar Athletes

Greensboro, N.C. - Nineteen Atlantic Coast Conference scholar athletes
have been named recipients of the 2001 Weaver-James-Corrigan
Postgraduate Scholarships, as announced by Commissioner John Swofford.
The scholarships are awarded to selected senior student-athletes who
have intentions of continuing academic work as full-time graduate
students. Each recipient will receive $5,000 to use toward his or her
graduate education. These student-athletes have performed with
distinction in the classroom and in their respective sports, and have
demonstrated exemplary conduct in the community.
In addition, the league has honored four student-athletes with
the first-ever ACC Scholars Award, an award that recognizes outstanding
athletic and academic achievement for graduating seniors who do not plan
to attend graduate school.
The scholarships are named in honor of past ACC commissioners,
the late Jim Weaver and Bob James, as well as Gene Corrigan. Prior to
1994, the Weaver-James postgraduate scholarships had been given as
separate honors. The Jim Weaver award originated in 1970 to honor
exceptional achievement on the playing field and in the classroom, while
the Bob James award was first given in 1987 also to honor outstanding
student-athletes.
North Carolina, NC State and Virginia lead the league with three
recipients each this year. Two student-athletes were selected from
Florida State, Georgia Tech, Maryland and Wake Forest, while Clemson and
Duke had one representative apiece on the list of honorees. Of the four
ACC Scholars Award recipients, two came from Duke, while Florida State
and North Carolina each had one selection.
Among the scholarship recipients are two-time All-ACC basketball
player Brooke Wyckoff from Florida State and Maryland football player
Brian Kopka, a finalist for the Lou Groza Award. In addition, cross
country and track runner Amy Beykirch and wrestler Zach Breitenbach,
both of NC State, have maintained career grade-point averages of 4.0.
Recipients of the ACC Scholars Award include Duke basketball player
Shane Battier, a first-team All-American and a GTE Academic All-American
in 2000, and Florida State football player Chris Weinke, the 2000
Heisman Trophy winner and a first-team All-American. Jana Toepel, a
North Carolina field hockey player who also plays on the U.S. National
Team, and Duke soccer player Ali Curtis, who has earned National Player
of the Year honors in each of the past two seasons, also earned ACC
Scholars Awards.

Sergio Aguirre, Georgia Tech, Men's Tennis, Smyrna, Ga.
A four-year starter who played No. 1 singles in 2000 ... set the school
record for doubles wins in a season with 30 ... a Dean's List student
each year and a three-time member of the GT All-Academic team ... the
1999 ACC Champion at No. 3 doubles ... twice selected to the ACC Honor
Roll ... member of Golden Key National Honor Society ... serves on GT
Student-Athlete Advisory Board ... a mentor and tutor at elementary
schools.
Amy Beykirch, NC State, Women's Cross Country/Track & Field, Tuckerton,

A three-time All-ACC selection in cross country ... helped the 2000 NC
State cross country team with the ACC Championship ... earned
All-District III honors for cross country during each of her four
seasons ... finished third at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championship
in the 5,000 meters ... a three-time ACC Academic Honor Roll selection.
Zach Breitenbach, NC State, Wrestling, Cary, N.C.
Had a 16-4 career mark against ACC opponents and a 24-4 season mark
entering the 2001 ACC Championship ... ranked as high as eighth
nationally in his weight division ... earned ACC Wrester of the Week
twice this season ... finished second at the 1999 and 2000 ACC
Championships, earning All-ACC honors both years ... an Academic
All-American ... had a streak of 15 straight wins in 2001.
Michael Bucy, North Carolina, Men's Soccer, Raleigh, N.C.
An All-ACC selection and All-ACC Tournament pick in 2000 ... led the ACC
and was sixth in the nation in 2000 with 0.63 assists per game ... a
two-time Academic All-American ... 2000 recipient of UNC's Tatum Award,
given for athletic performance and community service ... organized the
UNC Children's Charity Dance Marathon in 1999 and 2000 ... received the
ACC Top Six for Service Award, given for community service.

Recognized as the ACC's 2000 Jim Tatum Award winner, given to the top
senior student-athlete among ACC football players ... started all 11
games at offensive tackle and helped the Tar Heels rush for 148.5 yards
per game, the highest average since 1995 ... a two-time National
Football Foundation scholar-athlete award recipient ... member of the

chart with 38 goals and 20 assists for 96 total points ... scored nine
game-winning goals during her tenure ... earned All-ACC honors in 1999
and was named to ACC All-Tournament team in 2000.
Brooke Wyckoff, Florida State, Women's Basketball, West Chester, Ohio
Team co-captain who leads FSU in scoring and is second in rebounds per

the Week on Feb. 12 after leading FSU to three straight wins ... ranks
