Burdick, Pro Receive ACC Postgraduate Scholarships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest's Matthew Burdick and Stephan Pro were among 16 student-athletes named recipients of the Atlantic Coast Conference's Weaver-James-Corrigan Postgraduate Awards, announced today by Commissioner John Swofford.

The scholarships are given to selected student-athletes who have intentions of continuing academic work as full-time graduate students. Each recipient will receive $5,000 to use towards their graduate education. Each student-athlete has performed with distinction both in the classroom and in their respective sports, and demonstrated exemplary conduct in the community.

Burdick, a native of Winston-Salem, is a three-year starting placekicker for the Demon Deacon football team. He was the team's leading scorer in 1999, accounting for 75 points. Burdick also tied the school single-season record by kicking 16 field goals, and broke the school record for career field goals with 46. He earned ACC Specialist of the Week honors following Wake's win at North Carolina, where he kicked a career-high four field goals. A Dean's List and ACC Honor Roll selection, he earned his undergraduate degree in just three years at WFU and is currently working toward a master's degree in education.

Pro, a native of Olathe, Kan., is a member of WFU's cross country/track & field team. He earned All-ACC honors this season, finishing second in the 5,000 meters at the 2000 ACC Indoor Track Championships, and also had a strong finish in the 3,000 meter event, finishing fourth. Pro also earned All-ACC honors in 1998, finishing sixth at the ACC Cross Country Championships. Pro was also the Demon Deacons' top finisher at the NCAA Southeast Regional in 1999.

The 16 students will be honored Tuesday, April 11, 2000, in Greensboro, N.C. at a luncheon hosted by the Nat Greene Kiwanis.
