Wake Forest Cheer Dominates Competition

Aug. 8, 2001

KNOXVILLE, TN - The Wake Forest cheerleading squad brought home a stack of awards last weekend from the 2001 UCA College Cheerleading Competition, hosted by the University of Tennessee. Competing against top-flight cheerleaders from Tennessee, Butler, Appalachian State, Western Carolina, East Tennessee State, Western Alabama and Georgia Southern, Wake Forest fared well. The Demon Deacons, coached by Brent Campbell, took first place in the sideline competition, first place in the fight song competition and second place in the cheer competition.

In the mascot competition, Kyle Jones had the distinguished honor of wearing the Demon Deacon costume and beat out Duke's Blue Devil, Tennessee's Smokey, Georgia Southern's Gus, UT-Chattanooga's Scrappy and Butler's Bulldog to win the Best Overall award.

Wake Forest's cheer and dance units will be back in action Saturday, September 8, as they take to the sidelines of Groves Stadium for the Demon Deacons' home opening football game against Appalachian State.
