Gold Rush: 100% Cotten
Aug. 13, 2003 by Stan Cotten It seems every year that summer gets shorter and shorter. Wasn't it just yesterday that the Deacs' baseball season came to an end to put a close on another broadcast season? Feels like it - yet here we are getting ready to crank it all up again. Great isn't it? My golf game sure could use several more rounds before the garage becomes home to the clubs and spikes for six months. A few more days at the beach to bake out whatever ails would be nice. Another of mom's home-cooked Tennessee suppers would hit the spot about right now. But golf is over. Florida's Gulf Coast is a distant memory. And the next pile of fried chicken livers won't come until Christmas or maybe even later if the Deacs go bowling. But that's OK. It's time for football. And that's a very good thing. Our official broadcast season will begin on Wednesday night, Aug. 20, with Coach Jim Grobe's first radio call-in show. The name of the show has been changed from "Deacon SportsPage" to "The Jim Grobe Show." The 90-minute program will again be presented by the Adam's Mark Winston-Salem, but the site of the show has moved from on campus to The Loop Pizza Grille in the Thruway Shopping Center. As has been the case in past years, the first 30 minutes of the show will be dedicated to special interviews and features. The final hour will be one-on-one with Coach Grobe taking telephone calls and answering questions from Wake Forest fans in attendance. NEW STATIONS Demon Deacon fans in the Raleigh area will have three new FM signals from which to choose when it comes to listening to Wake Forest football and basketball and the call-in shows of Coach Jim Grobe and Coach Skip Prosser. ISP Sports and Calvary Satellite Network stations WAJC and WJIJ entered into a broadcast agreement earlier this summer. WAJC is broadcast over two frequencies - 90.5 FM and 99.9 FM. WJIJ is located at 94.3 on the FM dial. The stations are non-commercial and carry Christian programming. PLAY BALL The Deacs' upcoming season opener at Boston College will be played at Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill. Of the nine games played between the two teams at Boston College, this year's game marks just the second at Alumni Stadium. Eight times the Deacs and Eagles met at stadiums known for baseball - Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox - and Braves Field which was home to the then Boston Braves who moved on to Milwaukee before settling down in Atlanta. SELECT COMPANY Wake Forest is the only team in the ACC not to have a returning starter at the quarterback position this fall. "We expect Cory Randolph to be the guy," says Coach Jim Grobe of the Lake City, Fla., sophomore who backed up James MacPherson a year ago. "I think he can be a really good quarterback for us." Even though all other of the eight ACC schools return their starters from last year, Wake's Randolph might one of two new starters in the league. Georgia Tech Coach Chan Gailey is starting from scratch. A.J. Suggs is the returning starter, but Gailey indicated at the ACC Kickoff in July that Suggs would likely lose his job.
