Jim Daves Named Assistant Athletic Director for Media Relations

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Jim Daves has been named assistant athletic director for media relations at Wake Forest, Director of Athletics Ron Wellman announced today. He replaces John Justus, who resigned last month after 16 years as the university's sports information director. Daves will oversee all operations of the athletic department's media relations office (formerly known as sports information).

Daves comes to Wake Forest from the University of Washington, where he has served as assistant athletic director for media relations since 1992. During his tenure at Washington, Daves oversaw all media relations efforts for a 23-sport athletics program, including the university's radio and television broadcast contracts. He also served as the media director for 1993 West Regional, the 1995 Final Four, and the 1999 First and Second Rounds of of the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Daves has been a member of the NCAA Communications Committee for the NCAA Men's Basketball Final Four for the past three years.

Prior to joining the UW staff, Daves was an assistant and associate sports information director at the University of Notre Dame from 1986-92. There he worked extensively with the football and men's basketball teams, serving as the editor of both sports' gameday programs. His football programs earned Best in the Nation citations five straight years from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Daves also served as the director of communications for the Midwestern Collegiate Conference from 1985-86.

A 37-year-old native of Greensboro, N.C., Daves graduated from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte with a degree in business administration in 1984. As an undergraduate, he spent four years as a student assistant in the UNCC sports information office.

His wife, Patti, is the special events director for the athletic department at the University of Washington and will join him in Winston-Salem at the conclustion of football season.
