The Wake Forest women's soccer team returns to the friendly confines of Spry Stadium this weekend as the 23rd-ranked Demon Deacons host the Wake Forest/Nike Invitational, featuring UNC Charlotte, Oregon and UCLA. The 49ers and Bruins will kick off the tournament on Friday at 5 p.m. while the Deacs and the Ducks will square off at 7 p.m. The action will continue on Sunday with Oregon facing UNC Charlotte at 12:30 p.m. and Wake Forest playing UCLA in the tournament finale on Sunday at 3 p.m.

Wake Forest's record currently stands at 3-0 after winning the tournament title at the Air Force Falcon Invitational last weekend in Colorado Springs by defeating Denver (3-0) and Air Force (2-1). The Deacons' offensive attack continues to be paced by senior forward Anne Shropshire (Lexington, KY), who leads the squad in goals (3), assists (2) and points (8). Shropshire has already set new Wake Forest career records for goals (24), assists (25) and points (73).

Freshman forward Joline Charlton (Stone Mountain, GA) has made an immediate impact with two goals in three games while sophomore defender Stacy Roeck (Solana Beach, CA) anchors an outstanding defense that is allowing just 0.33 goals per game.

MEN'S SOCCER HOSTS LIBERTY, VISITS SOUTH CAROLINA

The Wake Forest men's soccer team will host the Liberty Flames at Spry Stadium on Wednesday, Sept. 8, with kickoff set for 7 p.m. Wake Forest leads the all-time series 2-0-1. The first meeting between the two schools was in 1980, a 2-1 WFU win at Liberty. The two teams played to a scoreless tie in a game played at Wake in 1986. The latest meeting was a home field win for the Deacs (1-0) in 1995.

After the meeting with the Flames, the Deacons will travel to Columbia, S.C. to take on South Carolina on Saturday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. USC leads the series 9-8-2. The first meeting came in 1981 with the Gamecocks winning 2-1. The latest meeting came last season with WFU prevailing 2-1 at Spry Stadium.

The men's soccer team is currently 2-0 on the season with wins over Coastal Carolina at home (6-1) and at the College of Charleston (2-1) last week. The Wake Forest offense has been paced by junior Jaron Barbee (Hinckley, OH) and junior Ben Stafford (Signal Mountain, TN), who each have two goals through the first two games of the 1999 season.

VOLLEYBALL HITS THE ROAD FOR FOUR MATCHES

After winning their first five matches at home, the Wake Forest volleyball team hits the road for four contests this week. The Demon Deacons (5-0) travel to UNC Charlotte for a 7:00 match on Wednesday, Sept. 8, then head to Oxford, MS, to compete in the Ole Miss Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 10 and 11.

Wake dominated all five of its opponents last week, sweeping each in three-game matches. The Demon Deacons opened the season with a 3-0 win over High Point on Wednesday, then swept William & Mary (3-0), Wyoming (3-0), Western Carolina (3-0), and Montana State (3-0) on Friday and Saturday at the Deacon Invitational to capture the tournament crown. Junior setter Julie Cowley (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) led the Deacs with a 14.2 assists per game average on the week, earning Deacon Invitational Tournament MVP honors. Sophomore middle blocker Margaret Davidson (Huntsville, AL) also had an impressive week, posting a team-high .456 hitting percentage and averaging 3.17 kills and 1.42 blocks per game. Davidson also earned a spot on the Deacon Invitational All-Tournament team.

FIELD HOCKEY VISITS ASU, HOSTS DUKE

The Wake Forest field hockey team will take its first road trip of the season to Appalachian State on Tuesday, Sept. 7. Gametime is set for 7:30 p.m. Following the trip to ASU, the Deacons will host ACC foe Duke in a non-conference game on Saturday, Sept. 11, at 1 p.m.

Duke and Wake Forest met three times last season. The two teams split the regular season meetings with each team winning on its home field. They also played in the first round of the ACC Tournament with the Deacons coming out on top 3-2 in a game that went to two overtimes. The Deacons did not play Appalachian State in 1998. The last meeting between Wake and ASU came in 1997 with Wake winning 10-0 at Kentner Stadium.
