OFF TO A 3-0 START, MEN'S SOCCER HOSTS NO. 25 UNC CHARLOTTE

The Wake Forest men's soccer team faces its first ranked opponent of the season, hosting regional rival and 25th-ranked UNC Charlotte on Friday, Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. at Spry Stadium. The Demon Deacons upped their record to 3-0 over the weekend by defeating San Francisco, 2-1, and St. Bonaventure, 5-0, to earn the Nike-Wake Forest Classic tournament championship.

Freshman midfielder Jamal Seale was named the tournament's MVP after tallying three goals and two assists in two games, including both game-winning goals. Also earning spots on the All-Tournament Team were the Deacs' three starting defenders - juniors Chad Evans and David Kaweesi-Mukooza and sophomore Brock Hilpert.

VOLLEYBALL HOSTS UNCG, TRAVELS TO MINNESOTA

Volleyball season rolls on this week as Wake Forest has four matches on the schedule. The Demon Deacons will host UNC Greensboro on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Gym before taking to the road for the first time this season over the weekend.

Wake Forest will compete in the Nike Challenge in Minneapolis, Minn., facing Missouri on Friday, Sept. 11 at 6 p.m., Minnesota on Saturday at 12 p.m. and Oregon on Saturday at 6 p.m. The tournament, which features three strong teams, will be a good early season challenge for head coach Mary Buczek's squad.

The Demon Deacons got the 1998 season off to a good start last weekend at the Deacon Invitational, posting a 3-1 record to finish in second place. Wake Forest downed Marshall, 3-0, St. John's, 3-0, and Appalachian State, 3-0, while falling only to Oklahoma, 1-3. The Deacs were paced by freshman outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya, who tallied a team high 64 kills and 49 digs with a solid .290 hitting percentage. Maso de Moya was named to the all-tournament team. Junior Katie Horne, who recorded 49 kills, and sophomore Corie Miles, who tallied 36 kills and 14 total blocks, also played well for the Deacons.

WOMEN'S SOCCER VISITS TRAVELS TO NO. 6 PORTLAND

A busy week lies ahead for the Wake Forest women's soccer team with three matches on the road over the span of five days, beginning with a trip to Davidson on Wednesday, Sept. 9 for a 5 p.m. match. The Demon Deacons then travel to Portland, Ore., for the Adidas Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 12-13. Wake Forest will face Oregon on Saturday at 3 p.m. (ET) and will take on No. 6 Portland on Sunday at 5:15 p.m. (ET) in their first of many matchups against ranked opponents this season.

The Deacons (1-0-1) opened the season with a win over College of Charleston, 2-0, and a tie against South Carolina, 1-1, last week. Wake Forest was led by strong play from a talented freshman class as forward Emily Taggart and midfielders Sarah Kate Noftsinger and Stacy Roeck all contributed goals in the two matches. Fellow freshman Rachel Parri also added an assist against College of Charleston, making the freshman class responsible for seven of eight points scored by Wake Forest this season. Freshman goalkeeper Erin Regan started against South Carolina, making four saves and allowing just one goal in 120 minutes of play.

FIELD HOCKEY FACES MICHIGAN, AMERICAN AND VCU

After a matchup with No. 11 Michigan on Monday, Sept. 7 at 2 p.m. in the final round of the ACC-Big 10 Challenge, the Wake Forest field hockey squad will travel across the northern border of North Carolina this weekend to face off with Colonial Athletic Association members American and Virginia Commonwealth.

American is currently ranked among the nation's top 20. Last season the Deacons defeated American by a final of 6-2 and Virginia Commonwealth, 4-1. Both games will be played in Richmond, Va., as the Deacs will take on American on Friday, Sept. 11 at 5 p.m. and VCU on Sunday, Sept. 13 at 1 p.m.

Wake Forest's record currently stands at 0-1 after a season opening loss to Northwestern in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge last weekend.

14th-RANKED WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY HEADS TO ACC PREVIEW

Off to a running start to the season, the Wake Forest women's cross country team will turn its attention to the ACC Preview on Sat., Sept. 12 in Charlottesville, Va. The meet will give the team a look at the same course which will host the ACC Championship in November.

The Demon Deacons opened the season last weekend on a strong note at the Appalachian State Invitational, claiming first place in the meet. The squad was paced by All-American junior Janelle Kraus who beat all the competitors to the finish line for her fifth career individual title. Kraus won the season opening meet for the second consecutive year. Overall, Wake Forest placed three runners in the top five, including Kraus, junior Emily Selvidio and senior Amy Wallace, and finished with six runners among the top 10.

Wake Forest is currently ranked 14th in the country in the latest Women's Cross Country Association national poll.

MEN'S GOLF COMPETES IN CHALLENGING FIELD AT THE RIDGES INTERCOLLEGIATE

The Wake Forest men's golf team heads to Johnson City, Tenn., this weekend to compete in The Ridges Intercollegiate golf tournament on Sept. 12-13 in their second tournament of the fall. The event features a strong 14-team field, including 10 teams ranked in the Mastercard Preseason Top 25.

The Demon Deacons opened the fall season this past weekend with a fifth-place finish at the G. Gunby Jordan Intercollegiate, tallying a three-round team score of 887, or 23-over par. Senior Michael Capone led the way for the Deacs with a sixth-place individual finish, shooting 70-74-71 to finish the tournament at 1-under par.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TAKES WEEK OFF AFTER GOOD SEASON OPENER

The Wake Forest men's cross country team will take this weekend off after getting the 1998 season off to a good start last week. The Deacon harriers will next be in action on Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Tennessee Invitational in Knoxville, Tenn.

Last weekend the squad competed at the UNC Charlotte Cross Country relays, which used a team relay format as five schools battled head to head. Wake Forest finished the meet in second place with a 3-1 record, defeating North Carolina, Radford and Wofford, while falling only to UNC Charlotte.

The duo of sophomore Stephan Pro and freshman Philip Wiles was Wake's most successful relay team on the day, clearing the 12 mile course in a time of 1:01.05 to finish in fourth place individually.
