Wake Forest Athletics Week Ahead

No. 25 WOMEN'S SOCCER HOSTS CLEMSON & FLORIDA STATE AS ACC PLAY BEGINS
Wake Forest's record currently stands at 4-1 after splitting a pair of matches last weekend at the Wake Forest/Nike Invitational. The Demon Deacons downed Oregon, 2-0, before suffering their first defeat of the year at the hands of UCLA, 1-0. The Deacons' offensive attack continues to be paced by senior forward Anne Shropshire (Lexington, KY), who leads the squad in goals (3), assists (2) and points (8). Shropshire has already set new Wake Forest career records for goals (24), assists (25) and points (73).
Freshman forward Joline Charlton (Stone Mountain, GA) has made an immediate impact with three goals in five games while sophomore defender Stacy Roeck (Solana Beach, CA) anchors an outstanding defense that is allowing just 0.40 goals per game.
MEN'S SOCCER HOSTS DAVIDSON, OPENS ACC PLAY
After hosting the Wildcats, the Deacons open ACC play at the Virginia Cavaliers on Sunday, Sept. 19. Gametime is set for 2 p.m. The Cavaliers were ranked 14th last week, but lost their ACC opener to Maryland on Sunday and now have a record of 2-2 overall and 0-1 in ACC play. Last year's match between the Cavaliers and the Demon Deacons ended in a 2-2 deadlock. Virginia leads the all-time series 20-2-2.
The men's soccer team comes into this week unbeaten at 3-0-1. Last week, they had a home field win over Liberty on Wednesday and a 3-3 tie at South Carolina on Saturday. In the win over Liberty, sophomore Chris Lonteen (Rolling Meadows, IL) scored both of the Deacons goals to lead WFU to a 2-1 victory over the Flames. Sophomore Jamal Seale (Overland Park, KS) added an assist for the Deacons. In the South Carolina game, junior Jaron Barbee (Hinckley, OH), sophomore Matt Thompson (Wellesley, MA) and senior Greg Krauss (Clearwater, FL) each scored a goal, but South Carolina scored two late goals to tie the game at 3-3 and force the game to overtime. After two scoreless overtime periods, the game ended 3-3.
Lonteen leads the Deacons in points so far this season. Lonteen has seven points on the season and is followed by Barbee with six, and the two players are tied for the team lead in goals with three apiece. Senior goalkeeper Sean Conner (Georgetown, TX) has allowed only six goals and has saved 17 shots in 390 minutes of play.
VOLLEYBALL HOSTS RADFORD, VISITS APP STATE
After winning the first five matches of the season, the Deacons lost 3-0 to UNC Charlotte on Wednesday, Sept. 8. Wake then traveled to Oxford, MS, for the Ole Miss Invitational winning three matches out of four. On Friday, Sept. 10, the Deacons won 3-1 over Arkansas State and then lost to Mississippi 2-3. On Saturday, the Deacons rallied and defeated Arkansas State (3-1) and Mississippi (3-1), clinching the invitational championship.
Sophomore Trina Maso de Moya (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) and senior outside hitter Katie Horne (Nashua, NH) lead the team with 3.63 and 3.44 kills per game, respectively. Sophomore middle blocker Margaret Davidson (Huntsville, AL) leads the Deacons with a .360 hitting percentage, while junior setter Julie Cowley (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) has a team high 12.24 assists per game.
FIELD HOCKEY CONTINUES PLAY WITH THREE GAMES
The field hockey team had an impressive week last week, winning three games to run its record to 5-0 on the season. The Deacons shut out Appalachian State, 5-0, on the road to open the week. Jemima Cameron led the team with two goals, while Katie Kubic, Jennie Shelton and Jenny Everett added a goal apiece.
The Deacons returned home to shut out Duke, 6-0. Everett's two goals led the team. Shelton, Samantha Rush, Carrie Neidhardt and Heather Aughinbaugh scored one goal each for the Deacs.
On Sunday, Wake Forest downed American University, 7-1, as Shelton, Everett and Amy Marchell scored two goals each to lead the Deacons to the victory.
On the season, Everett leads the team in points with 24, goals with 10 and is second in assists with four. Marchell leads the team in assists with five. Starting goalkeeper Meaghan Nitka has 13 saves and has only allowed two goals through five games.
MEN'S GOLF TRAVELS TO VIRGINIA
WOMEN'S TENNIS OPENS 1999-2000 SEASON AT WILLIAM & MARY INVITATIONAL
Leading the returnees is junior Mariel Verban (Bloomington, IL), who finished the 1998-99 season with a school record 43-17 singles record and was ranked 11th in the nation. In all, the Demon Deacons return five of their top six players, including senior Annemarie Milton (Palm Beach Gardens, FL), junior Jackie Houston (Kings Mountain, NC) and sophomores Janet Bergman (Pinehurst, NC) and Lea Miller (Gainesville, GA).
MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY OPENS AT WINTHROP INVITATIONAL
The squad is led by junior Stephan Pro (Olathe, KS) who earned All-ACC honors last fall as a sophomore. In all, five of the Deacs' top six runners from last year return, including sophomores Mike Altieri (Sacramento, CA), Sean Nagorny (York, PA), Garrick Hill (Advance, NC) and Chris Estwanik (Dublin, OH).
The Demon Deacons placed 6th at the ACC Championships last fall, ending a streak of 10 consecutive years of finishing either first or second at the conference meet.
WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RETURNS TO ACTION AT PRE ACC MEET
The squad is paced by All-American senior Janelle Kraus (Shelter Island, NY) who captured the individual title two weeks ago at the Appalachian State Invitational by clearing the 5K course in a time of 17:28. Kraus now owns a school-record 11 individual titles in her career. Juniors Kelly Brady (Norwich, VT) and Erin Haugh (Nanuet, NY) each posted top-five finishes at the meet for the Deacs, with Brady coming in fourth and Haugh placing fifth.
The women's cross country team is ranked 27th in the latest coaches' poll.
