MEN'S SOCCER HOSTS THE NIKE-WAKE FOREST CLASSIC
The 18th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team will host the 1999 Nike-Wake Forest Classic Friday, Sept. 24 and Sunday, Sept. 26 at Spry Stadium. On Friday, UNC-Charlotte and Vanderbilt play at 6 p.m. followed by Wake Forest and Richmond at 8 p.m. On Sunday, UNC-Charlotte and Richmond meet at noon, while Wake Forest and Vanderbilt conclude the Classic at 2 p.m.

Wake Forest comes into the tournament 4-0-2 overall and 0-0-1 in ACC play. Last week, the Deacons defeated the Davidson Wildcats 5-0 at Spry Stadium on Sept. 15. The Deacons had five different players, four of them reserves, score goals in the game. Jamal Seale was the lone starter to score, while reserves Greg Krauss, Jaron Barbee, Viktor Litovka and Bobby Gehring provided the rest of the offense for the Deacons. Wake Forest then tied the Virginia Cavaliers 1-1 in Charlottesville in the Deacs' ACC opener on Sunday, Sept. 19. Gehring scored Wake's only goal. The game went to two overtimes and finally ended in a 1-1 tie.

Through the first six games of the season, Chris Lonteen (Rolling Meadows, IL) and Jaron Barbee (Hinckley, OH) lead the team in total points with eight apiece. Lonteen has three goals and two assists, while Barbee has four goals. Barbee's four goals leads the team in that category, while Lonteen's three is second. Jamal Seale (Overland Park, KS) leads the team in assists with four and Lonteen, Ben Stafford (Signal Mountain, TN) and Matt Thompson (Wellesley, MA) are all tied for second with two apiece. Goalkeeper Sean Conner (Georgetown, TX) has played all 570 minutes of the season, giving up just seven goals and has posted one shutout against Davidson.

WOMEN'S SOCCER VISITS NC STATE
Fresh off a successful two-game sweep of ACC foes Clemson and Florida State last weekend, the Wake Forest women's soccer team hits the road this week for a conference matchup with NC State. The Demon Deacons will get a much-needed six days off from competition before traveling to Raleigh on Sunday for a 1 p.m. matchup with the Wolfpack.

Wake Forest's record currently stands at 6-1 overall and 2-0 in the ACC after last weekend's two critical league wins over the Tigers (2-1) and the Seminoles (2-1) The Demon Deacons currently stand in a three-way tie for first place in the ACC standings with North Carolina and Virginia.

The Deacons' offensive attack continues to be paced by senior forward Anne Shropshire (Lexington, KY), who leads the squad in goals (3), assists (3) and points (9). Shropshire has already set new Wake Forest career records for goals (24), assists (26) and points (74). Freshman forward Joline Charlton (Stone Mountain, GA) has made an immediate impact with three goals in seven games while sophomore defender Stacy Roeck (Solana Beach, CA) anchors an outstanding defense that is allowing just 0.57 goals per game.

VOLLEYBALL OPENS LEAGUE PLAY
After picking up two more nonconference wins last week to improve to 10-2 overall, the Wake Forest women's volleyball team opens conference play with three ACC matches this week. The Deacs face their biggest test of the early season on Tuesday, when they host undefeated and 15th-ranked Clemson at 7:00 pm. Wake then entertains Georgia Tech (10-2) and Florida State (5-5) on Friday and Saturday, respectively, with both matches starting at 7:00 pm.

Through 12 matches, the Deacs are led by sophomore outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya (Ft. Lauderdale, FL), who averages 3.78 kills and 4.27 digs per game. Sophomore middle blocker Margaret Davidson (Huntsville, AL) owns a team-high .360 attack percentage, while junior setter Julie Cowley (Rancho Santa Fe, CA) averages 12.33 assists per game.

No, 9 FIELD HOCKEY OPENS ACC PLAY AT No. 4 MARYLAND
The ninth-ranked Wake Forest field hockey team will try to continue its impressive start when it travels to College Park, Md. to take on the Maryland Terrapins, ranked fourth in the country, to open ACC play.

The Deacons are currently 7-0 after going 2-0 in a tournament in Louisville, Ky. over the weekend. The game scheduled for Wednesday, Sept. 15 against Davidson was postponed. In the Louisville tournament, Wake defeated Miami (Ohio) 6-1 on Saturday and Pacific 6-0 on Sunday. Jenny Everett and Jemima Cameron each scored two goals to lead the Deacons in the Miami game. Against Pacific, Everett and Jennie Shelton led Wake with two goals apiece.

For the season, Everett leads the team in total points with 29 (12 goals, five assists), while Shelton is second with 24 points (11 goals, two assists). Everett's 12 goals leads the team in that category and Amy Marchell leads the team in assists with six. Starting goalkeeper Meaghan Nitka has a 7-0 record and has allowed just three goals over those seven games.

WOMEN'S TENNIS CONTINUES PLAY AT NATIONAL CLAY COURTS
The Wake Forest women's tennis team will travel to Baltimore, Md. Sept. 23-26 to compete in the National Clay Courts.

The Deacons had an impressive showing at the William & Mary Invitational over the weekend. Wake Forest's Jackie Houston defeated Brooke Siebel of Duke 6-3, 2-6, 6-2 to win the singles championship in the Green Division. Maren Haus of Wake Forest defeated teammate Janet Bergman, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 in the finals of the Mary Division.

In the doubles competition, Wake Forest's Mariel Verban and Bea Bielik won the Flight A Doubles championship by default over a team from host school William & Mary.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNS AT GREENSBORO INVITATIONAL
The Wake Forest men's cross country team, under the direction of interim head coach Bill Dellinger, returns to the races this week for the Greensboro Invitational on Saturday, September 25th. The Demon Deacons are coming off an impressive showing last weekend at the Winthrop Invitational where they captured the team championship.

The squad is led by junior Stephan Pro (Olathe, KS) who earned All-ACC honors last fall as a sophomore and placed 6th at the Winthrop meet. Sophomores Mike Altieri (Sacramento, CA) enjoyed a breakthrough performance at Winthrop when he picked up his first career individual title by clearing the 8K courese in a time of 24:51. In all, the Demon Deacons had six runners place in the top 10, including sophomores Garrick Hill (Advance, NC), 4th, Chris Estwanik (Dublin, OH), 7th, Sean Nagorny (York, PA), 9th, and Philip Wiles (Huntsville, AL), 10th.

WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RETURNS TO ACTION
The Wake Forest women's cross country team, under the direction of first-year head coach Annie Bennett, will compete in their third race of the season this Saturday at the Greensboro Invitational. The Demon Deacons have recorded second place finishes in each of the first two races of the season (Appalachian State and Winthrop).

The squad is paced by All-American senior Janelle Kraus (Shelter Island, NY) who has captured the individual title in each of the first two races of the season and now owns a school-record 12 individual titles in her career. Senior Jill Snyder (Lewisburg, PA) placed 6th at the Winthrop meet last week, while juniors Kelly Brady (Norwich, VT) and Erin Haugh (Nanuet, NY) each posted top-five finishes in the opening meet of the season at Appalachian State.
