OFF TO 11-3 START, VOLLEYBALL CONTINUES ACC PLAY WITH DUKE & FLORIDA STATE
The Wake Forest volleyball team continues Atlantic Coast Conference play this week with games against Duke and Florida State. The Demon Deacons will host Duke at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Gym on Tuesday night before traveling to Tallahassee to play Florida State on Friday evening.

The Demon Deacons are off to their best start since 1980 with an 11-3 overall record and currently stand at 1-1 in the ACC.

Wake Forest notched their second ACC win in the new era over the weekend with a victory over Virginia on Friday night. Freshman Margaret Davidson (Huntsville, Ala.) led the Deacons with a career-high six block assists in the three-game sweep of the Cavaliers. Freshman sensation Trina Maso de Moya (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.) continued her outstanding play, recording her eighth double-double of the season with 14 kills and 10 digs. She leads the squad with 165 kills and 146 digs this season.

18TH-RANKED MEN'S SOCCER VISITS DAVIDSON AFTER UPSET OF NO. 1 WASHINGTON
The Wake Forest men's soccer team, flying high after their 2-1 upset of top-ranked Washington in Seattle on Sunday, will look to shake off the jet lag and prepare for a much shorter road trip to Davidson this Friday. Game time is 7 p.m. at Richardson Field in Davidson, NC. Despite coming off such a big win, the Deacs will be certain not to overlook the 1-9 Wildcats, who came into Winston-Salem last fall and surprised WFU with a 1-0 defeat.

Leading the Deacs in scoring through their first eight games are a pair of rookie midfielders, freshmen Jamal Seale (Overland Park, KS) and Chris Lonteen (Rolling Meadows, IL). Seale has five goals and two assists for 12 points, while Lonteen has three goals and an assist for seven points. Each contributed a goal in the team's win over the No. 1 Huskies.

Defensively, junior All-America candidate Chad Evans (LaPlata, MD) continues to earn accolades for his play, earning all-tournament honors at the Nike-Husky Classic in Seattle last weekend. Also earning spots on the all-tourney team were senior midfielders Serge Daniv (Lviv, Ukraine) and Kyle Bachmeier (Winston-Salem, NC).

WOMEN'S SOCCER TAKES ON KENTUCKY AND LSU IN ACC-SEC CHALLENGE
The Wake Forest women's soccer team continues their 11-game road stretch this weekend when they travel to Clemson, S.C. for the ACC-SEC Challenge. The Demon Deacons face Kentucky on Friday at 3 p.m. and take on LSU on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Wake Forest's record currently stands at 5-3-1 overall and 1-1 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons, who were ranked 25th in the coaches' poll last week, went 1-1 in the Irish Key Bank Classic last weekend. The Deacs defeated Missouri 4-1 before falling to 3rd-ranked Notre Dame, 3-0.

Senior midfielders Meghan Suddes (Dublin, OH) and Stefanie Mathews (Tucson, AZ) continue to lead the Wake Forest offense. Suddes leads the team in scoring with five goals while Mathews is responsible for three goals and two assists and was named to the all-Tournament team at the Irish Key Bank Classic.

Junior midfielder Anne Shropshire (Lexington, KY) currently has a team-high five assists as well as three goals on the season. She became Wake Forest's career leader in points last weekend with her two-goal performance against Missouri, raising her career total to 44 points.

FIELD HOCKEY SQUAD CONTINUES 10-GAME HOMESTAND THIS WEEK
The Demon Deacon field hockey team plays three games at Kentner Stadium this week, including a date with second-ranked North Carolina on Saturday at 1 p.m. Prior to that contest, Wake Forest will host Radford on Tuesday and Davidson on Thursday night, with both games beginning at 7 p.m.

The Deacs rolled past Appalachian State last week, 12-0, tying the school record for goals in a single game. Sophomore Jenny Everett (Rutland, Vt.) scored four goals in the victory. Wake Forest then played a fantastic game versus 10th-ranked Maryland, but fell short in losing 1-0. The Deacons held the Terrapins scoreless through the first 64 minutes of play.

Wake Forest's record now stands at 4-5 on the season, 0-2 in the ACC.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY HOSTS WAKE FOREST INVITATIONAL THIS WEEKEND
The 1998 season is into full swing for the Wake Forest men's cross country team as the Deacs will be in action on Saturday in the Wake Forest Invitational, the squad's lone home meet of the 1998 season. The race features teams from UNC Greensboro, UNC Asheville and East Tennessee State and the gun will sound for the men's event at 11:45 a.m. on the campus cross country course.

The Demon Deacons turned in a solid showing two weeks ago at the Tennessee Invitational, placing third in a field of seven quality teams. The meet gave head coach John Goodridge a good look at his squad which features a number of new faces.

The team is led by senior Matt Shady (Powell, OH) who was Wake Forest's top finisher last week at Tennessee. Shady posted a 7th place finish after clearing the 8,000 meter course in a time of 25:58.22. Other top performers included freshman Mike Altieri (Sacramento, CA), sophomore Stephan Pro (Olathe, KS), junior Joe DeGutis (Mt. Pleasant, MI) and freshman Sean Nagorny (York, PA), who all posted top 20 individual finishes.

NO. 14 WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNNING STRONG
Off to a running start to the 1998 season, the Wake Forest women's cross country team returns to action this week after posting wins in each of their first three meets of the season. The Deacs will be in action on Saturday in the Wake Forest Invitational, the squad's lone home meet of the 1998 season. The race features teams from UNC Greensboro, UNC Asheville, East Tennessee State and Delaware and will begin at 11 a.m. on the campus cross country course.

The squad is paced by All-American junior Janelle Kraus (Shelter Island, NY) who has captured the individual title in each of the first three meets of the season, earning ACC Performer of the Week honors in the process. Juniors Emily Selvidio (Westerly, RI), Alison Anibaldi (Punxsutawney, PA) and Jill Snyder (Lewisburg, PA) have also posted solid results to date.

Wake Forest is currently ranked 14th in the country in the latest Women's Cross Country Association national poll.

TENNIS TEAMS HEAD TO SOUTH CAROLINA FOR FALL TOURNAMENTS
The Wake Forest men's and women's tennis teams will both be in action this weekend in the state of South Carolina for fall tournaments. The men's squad will compete at the Clemson Fall Classic on Oct. 2-4. This will be the first team competition for the Deacons since the Wake Forest Fall Classic.

Myles Clouston (Durban, South Africa) and Raul Munoz (Mexico City, Mexico) came within one match of National Clay Court Championship, the first leg of the collegiate grand slam, in doubles action over the past weekend. The duo lost in the finals to the team from UNLV.

The women's tennis team will be competing at the Gamecock Classic at the University of South Carolina in Coulmbia on Oct. 2-4 as well.

MEN'S GOLF RETURNS TO ACTION AT WINDON MEMORIAL CLASSIC
The Wake Forest men's golf team returns to action next Monday and Tuesday, Oct. 5-6, at the Windon Memorial Classic in Glenview, IL. The Deacs have been off for the past three weeks after a disappointing 12th place finish at The Ridges Intercollegiate on Sept. 13. Through two fall tournaments, WFU has been led by senior Michael Capone (Cranston, RI), who has posted four of six rounds at or under par, averaging a team-low 72.7 strokes per round.
