WITH 17-5 RECORD, VOLLEYBALL CONTINUES ACC PLAY AT HOME THIS WEEK
Wake Forest begins the second half of the ACC season this week with three games at Reynolds Gym. The Demon Deacons begin the week on Tuesday with a match versus Georgia Tech at 5 p.m., followed by Clemson on Wednesday and Florida State on Saturday. Wake Forest defeated Clemson the first go round, while dropping matches at Georgia Tech and FSU.

Wake Forest is currently 17-5 overall and 5-3 in ACC play. The Deacons completed a three-game sweep of the Big Four teams during the first half of the season with 3-1 and 3-0 victories over North Carolina and NC State this past weekend. Young talent and veteran experience helped to lead the Deacons to an upset win over the 24th ranked Tar Heels. Senior Christy Kelly (Atlanta, GA) and freshman Trina Maso de Moya (Ft. Lauderdale, FL) each recorded double figures in kills and digs for Wake Forest in the match.

No. 14 WOMEN'S SOCCER CONTINUES HOMESTAND WITH ACC FOES VIRGINIA AND MARYLAND
The Wake Forest women's soccer team continues their six-game homestand with two important Atlantic Coast Conference matches this weekend which could move the Deacs anywhere between second and fifth place in the conference standings. The Demon Deacons host 12th-ranked Virginia on Friday at 7 p.m. and will take on 25th-ranked Maryland on Sunday at 1 p.m. Both matches will take place at Spry Stadium on campus. Wake Forest's record currently stands at 11-3-1 overall and 3-1 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons, who are ranked 14th according to Soccer News, went 2-0 last week after recording wins over NC State (7-0) and UNC Greensboro (3-2).

Junior forward Anne Shropshire (Lexington, KY) leads the Deacs with a team-high nine goals, 10 assists and 28 points. Over the last three weeks, Shropshire has set new Wake Forest career records for goals (19), assists (23) and points (61).

Senior midfielders Meghan Suddes (Dublin, OH) and Stefanie Mathews (Tucson, AZ) continue to be offensive forces as well. Suddes owns six goals and three assists while Mathews is responsible for four goals and seven assists. Stacy Roeck (Solana Beach, CA), who owns six goals, and Jessen Snyder (Mechanicsburg, PA) continue to anchor an outstanding defense that allows just 1.36 goals per game.

No. 12 MEN'S SOCCER HOSTS CHARLESTON SOUTHERN, MARYLAND THIS WEEK
The 12th-ranked Wake Forest men's soccer team continues its four-game homestand this week with matches against Charleston Southern and No. 20 Maryland. The Deacs host the Buccaneers on Tuesday, Oct. 20, and entertain the Terrapins on Saturday, Oct. 24, with both games starting at 7:00 pm.

The Deacs currently stand at 9-3-1 overall and 1-1-1 in the ACC after splitting a pair of matches last week. On Wednesday, No. 3 Duke snapped Wake's four-game win streak with a 3-1 decision in Durham, as senior midfielder Skip Jenkins (Charleston, SC) scored the Deacs' lone goal. On Saturday, WFU bounced back with a 3-0 blanking of visiting High Point, as junior forward Greg Krauss (Clearwater, FL) tallied the game-winning goal and an assist.

Krauss currently leads the Deacons in scoring with 18 points on eight goals and two assists, while freshman midfielder Jamal Seale (Overland Park, KS) has tallied 13 points on five goals and three assists.

No. 17 FIELD HOCKEY VISITS NO. 6 VIRGINIA THIS WEEK
The Demon Deacon field hockey squad faces a tough road test this weekend in Charlottesville, Va. Wake Forest will battle conference rival and sixth ranked Virginia at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 24.

The 17th ranked Demon Deacons completed their home season this past Saturday with an 8-1 victory over Richmond. Wake Forest went 8-2 at Kentner Stadium this season. Freshman Nienke van Ruiten leads the team in points (31) and goals (12) this season.

MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM PREPARES FOR ACC CHAMPIONSHIPS IN TWO WEEKS
The early season races of 1998 are completed as the Wake Forest men's cross country squad now turns its attentions to the ACC Championships in two weeks. The Demon Deacons ran in their final tune-up race of the season last weekend at the Wolverine Interregional in Ann Arbor, MI, finishing 10th of 11 teams participating.

The squad is paced by sophomore Stephan Pro (Olathe, KS), who was Wake Forest's top finisher at Michigan with a 16th place showing. Senior Steve Trezvant (Portsmouth, RI) turned in the top performance of his career earlier this season at the Wake Forest Invitational with a 2nd place individual finish and a career best time of 25:31, while senior Matt Shady (Powell, OH) has been a consistent performer all season long.

Freshman Mike Altieri (Sacramento, CA) has been a pleasant surprise for the Demon Deacons, and has worked his way into the top seven of the lineup.

No. 9 WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY RUNS STRONG IN WOLVERINE INTERREGIONAL
Although their streak of four consecutive wins came to an end last week, the ninth-ranked Wake Forest women's cross country team recorded a solid third place finish in a strong field at the Wolverine Interregional last weekend.

The squad is paced by All-American junior Janelle Kraus (Shelter Island, NY) who captured the individual title in her first four races of the season before recording a runner-up finish at Michigan. Juniors Emily Selvidio (Westerly, RI), Alison Anibaldi (Punxsutawney, PA) and Jill Snyder (Lewisburg, PA) as well as sophomore Kelly Brady (Norwich, VT) have also posted solid results to date, giving the team quality performances from top to bottom in the lineup.

Wake Forest is currently ranked 9th in the country in the latest Women's Cross Country Association national poll and is first in the Southeast Regional Poll.

MEN'S GOLF IN ACTION AT DUKE GOLF CLASSIC
The Wake Forest men's golf team is currently in action at the Duke Golf Classic, which began Sunday, October 18 and concludes with the final 18 holes of play today. The Demon Deacons stood in a tie for 11th place out of 15 teams heading into this morning's round after recording team scores of 293 and 305 in the first two rounds on Sunday.

Senior Michael Capone (Cranston, RI), the team's top golfer so far this fall, posted the Deacs' lowest overall score on Sunday at 5-over par, good for 36th place. The Duke Classic concludes the fall season for the men's golf team.

TENNIS TEAMS RETURN TO FALL ACTION THIS WEEKEND
The Wake Forest men's tennis team will participate in the South Carolina Fall Classic in Columbia, SC, this weekend. Myles Clouston (Durban, South Africa), Raul Munoz (Mexico City, Mex.) and Michael Berger (Greensboro, NC) all played in the ITA All-America Championships at the University of Texas last week and lead a veteran Wake Forest squad.

On the women's side, sophomore Mariel Verban (Bloomington, IL) will represent the Demon Deacons at the Riviera All-American Championships in Brentwood, CA, this week. The All-American Championships is one of four events in the collegiate Grand Slam.
