Wake Forest Athletics Ranked Eighth in Sears Cup Fall Standings
Dec. 5, 2000 Winston-Salem, NC -
The Wake Forest University athletic department is ranked eighth in the country in the first edition of the Sears Directors' Cup standings, its highest ranking in school history. The Sears Directors' Cup is presented each spring by the nation's athletics directors to the school with the most successful all-around athletic program.
WFU has compiled 132 points, just one point behind seventh-place Wisconsin and 58 points behind first-place Colorado. NCAA championship appearances by both men's and women's cross country teams, plus a first-ever Final Four showing for the Wake Forest field hockey team, vaulted the Deacons into the top 10. Cross country and field hockey were the only sports included in this first edition of the rankings.
The Deacon athletic program ranks second among ACC schools in the Sears Cup standings, just eight points behind fourth-place North Carolina. North Carolina State, rounding out the top 10 with 106 points, gives the ACC three teams in the top 10, more than any other league in the country.
