NO. 16 WOMEN'S SOCCER HOSTS NO. 4 VIRGINIA IN KEY ACC MATCHUP Mathews scored a plethora of goals last weekend at the Stanford/Nike Invitational, leading Wake Forest (7-1, 1-1 ACC) to two wins and the tournament title. Mathews scored two goals as the Deacons beat San Francisco and then added two more goals in a 2-1 win over No. 11 Stanford. Mathews, who has five goals and 12 points on the season, was named to the all-Tournament team. Along with Mathews, sophomore midfielder Karli Schilling (Doylestown, PA), sophomore goalkeeper Beth Klein (Rockville Centre, NY) and freshman defender Rachael Lewis (Matthews, NC) were all named to the all-Tournament team. Sophomore Anne Shropshire (Lexington, KY) leads the Deacons with four goals and five assists for a total of 13 points in 1997.
MEN'S SOCCER TO HOST NO. 5 JAMES MADISON The Deacons (4-3) suffered a 3-1 loss at the hands of No. 13 Virginia this past Sunday and are looking for a big win to boost their standing in the polls. Wake put up a valiant effort against the Cavaliers, and the two teams were locked in a scoreless tie until the final 11:29 of the game. Virginia erupted for three straight goals in the next 10 minutes, however, to take a 3-0 lead. The Deacs got on the board with just 1:33 remaining in the game, as freshman forward Ben Stafford (Signal Mountain, TN) scored off assists from sophomore defender Jeff Crane (LaPlata, MD) and Ihor Dotsenko (Kiev, Ukraine). Dotsenko was named as Wake's male student-athlete of the year on Sunday night at the athletic department's Academic Excellence Banquet.
VOLLEYBALL OPENS ACC SEASON ON THE ROAD THIS WEEKEND Sophomore outside hitter Sharon Harmsworth (Wadena, Saskatchewan) has been improving over the last seven matches. After starting out the season with only 34 kills in the first six matches, she has 108 in the last seven. She has also improved her hitting percentage by 154 points during that stretch.
FIELD HOCKEY LOOKS TO SNAP THREE-GAME SKID AT MARYLAND The Deacons (6-4) will be looking to get back into the win column this week, but have their work cut out for them as they travel to undefeated No. 3 Maryland on Saturday. Wake is led by freshman midfielder Jenny Everett (Rutland, VT), who is averaging nearly three points per game (13g, 2a, 28pts). Everett scored all three of the Deacs' goals last week.
NO. 4 WOMEN'S GOLF PLAYS IN MERCEDES-BENZ CHAMPIONSHIP Armas is ranked fourth in the latest MasterCard individual rankings and will play a challenging field in the event. There are 14 ranked teams in the 18-team field, including the top-four teams. The tournament will also have an international flavor as the Swedish National Team will be among the field.
MEN'S GOLF FINISHES FIFTH AT TOPY CUP IN JAPAN Ryan Gioffre (Greensboro, NC) and Michael Capone (Cranston, RI) both finished in the individual top 20, tying for 16th place with identical three-round scores of 223. The Deacs next travel to The Preview by Ping and GolfWeek, held Sept. 29-30 at the University of New Mexico in Albequerque, NM.
DEACON HARRIERS TO RUN IN NEW YORK AND GREENSBORO The Iona race will be the first race for the men's top performers in 1997. Leading the group for coach John Goodridge's team will be senior Nolan Swanson (Sherman, NY). In 1996, Swanson became the first Deacon male to win the ACC Championship.
NO. 14 WOMEN'S TENNIS SUCCESSFUL IN SEASON OPENER Senior Lule Aydin (Coopersburg, PA) went undefeated with a 4-0 record to win the B Singles flight, defeating Maryland's Meg Griffin in the finals. Aydin was named Wake Forest's female student-athlete of the year on Sunday night at the athletic department's Academic Excellence Banquet. Sophomore Annmarie Milton (Palm Beach Gardens, FL) went 3-1 to win the consolation bracket at C Singles. Senior Terri Hiete (Pacific Palisades, CA) won the consolations at D Singles with a 1-1 record. The Demon Deacons return to action when they compete in the National Clay Courts on Oct. 2-5 in Orlando, FL.
