10th Annual Texas Pete Twin City Ribfest Date: June 5-8, 2014 Hours: June 6-8: 11:00 am - 11:00 pm / June 9: Noon - 5:00 pm Location: 500 N. Marshall Street - Corner of N. Marshall Street and W. Fifth St. in Downtown Winston-Salem, NC 27101 - Winston-Salem Journal parking lot Description: What has become an annual Winston-Salem event heralding the arrival of summer originated in a downtown church parking lot in 2005. Daring to promote a whole 'nother type of 'cue; something beyond Lexington style BBQ, promoter Allen McDavid launched the first ever Twin City RibFest with Shiner Bock beer as the title sponsor. "Where is it written that pork barbecue has to be chopped or shredded,"McDavid asked. "There is more to the pig than shoulders and butts." The success of the Twin City RibFest was immediate and helped it gain recognition in Bon Apetit magazine and MarthaStewart.com, as well as being named Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism Bureau. In 2007 a local icon, Texas Pete hot sauce signed on as the title sponsor and ever since the festival has been known as the Texas Pete Twin City RibFest. Website: TwinCityRibFest.com PTI Run on the Runway 5K/10k Date: June 7, 2014 Hours: Registration 6:30-7:30 am | Race begins at 8:00 am Location: Piedmont Triad International Airport, Greensboro, N.C. Description: The PTI Run on the Runway 5K/10k will be held on June 7, 2014 on the airport's 9,000-foot runway. This certified run will benefit The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society in honor of Jay Kirby. All are invited to come out to run/walk the runway. The 5K/10k on the runway provides a smooth and flat surface. The entire race course will provide a close up view of the airport and surrounding area from the airfield. The course is wheelchair accessible and baby stroller friendly. Given the secure location of this run and for safety reasons, bikes, roller blades and inline skates will not be allowed. Dogs and other pets are strictly prohibited.You can pre-register for the race by visiting the website below or the day of at 7:00am until the races begin. Bring the family, a blanket and picnic dinner. Enjoy hay wagon rides, children's games, ice cream, Dino's New York hot dogs, and wonderful music from all eras by the band. Children's activities begin at 6:00 pm; the band begins at 7:00 pm. Website: www.BethabaraPark.org Wildfire Music Festival Date: June 14, 2014 Hours: 3:00 pm - 10:00 pm Location: White Oak Ampitheatre - Greensboro Coliseum Complex, Hanner St., Greensboro, NC 27403 Description: The Wildfire Music Festival was created to honor the life and legacy of Brenna Marie Currie. The proceeds of the festival will be used to give a music scholarship in Brenna's name and to bring the music programs of the I'll Fly Away Foundation to the Greensboro area schools. This festival is being put together by the friends and family of Brenna and some of her favorite bands have been asked to attend. Performing this year are The Time Jumpers, featuring Vince Gill, Ranger Doug, Dawn Sears & Kenny Sears; The Gibson Brothers; The Sierra Hull Bluegrass Band; The Greencards and more. The Annual Fun Fourth Festival has been recognized as a Top 20 Event by the Southeast Tourism society and as an Outstanding Event by Celebration NC Foundation. Beat the Heat has again been designated the official USATF 5K Championship race for the state of North Carolina. Last year, the event attracted 1,000 participants including many elite runners and over 100 first time 5K runners. The Beat the Heat 5K was featured in Running Journal magazine as the #1 Must Run "Under the Radar" race in the South! Main Street, China Grove, NC 28023 Description: This special event began in 1982 to honor the local farmers by inviting them to bring their produce to sell at a farmers market. Farmers Day has grown to become one of the best street festivals in North Carolina with attendance estimated at over 25,000 visitors. Farmers Day is held the third Saturday in July. From the opening ceremony at 9:00 a.m. until the last note of the street dance at 11:00 p.m. Farmers Day offers something for people of all ages. A great variety of food is always present on the streets. Stands selling funnel cakes, cotton candy, roasted corn on the cob, Gyro sandwiches, meat on a stick, Bar-B-Que, and of course hot dogs and hamburgers are plentiful. And don't forget to get a glass of fresh squeezed lemonade! Website: www.chinagrovenc.gov/index.aspx?nid=923 Fleet Feet Sports Mission 5K Date: August 9, 2014 Hours:8:00 am - All Day Location: Rescue Mission, 700 Oak Street Northwest, Winston-Salem, NC Description: The Mission 5K was created in partnership between Fleet Feet Sports and the Winston-Salem Rescue Mission, in an effort to benefit two mission-oriented charities that are driven by reaching out to others in need. The course is an out-and-back through downtown Winston-Salem. The race will start and end at the Rescue Mission building and the post-race expo will feature music from WBFJ, kids activities, and fellowship.
