Nov. 11, 1997 Wake Challenges 'Noles In Season FinaleWake Forest plays its final regular season game of the '97 season this Saturday against Florida State, the #1-ranked team in the country in this week's USA Today poll (FSU is #2 in the AP rankings). Kickoff time for the regionally televised (ACC/JP Sports network) contest in FSU's Doak Campbell Stadium is 12 noon. The Demon Deacons have won three of their last four games. Wake's 5-5 record is its best since 1992, and marks only the second time in nine years (since 1988) that the program has recorded more than three victories in one season. Demon Deacon wins over the 'Noles came in 1973 (9-7) in Winston-Salem and in 1959 (22-20) in Tallahassee. The lone tie in the series occurred in the very first meeting between the two schools in 1956. In its contests with Florida State the past five years, Wake Forest has been out-scored, 261-41, for an average deficit of 40 points per game (52.2 ppg to 8.2). Three times the Seminoles have gone over 50 points, including a 72-13 pounding that they administered to the Deacs on their last visit to Doak Campbell in 1995. Wake's closest decision in this recent competition was a 35-7 loss in Tallahassee in 1992. Last year the two teams met in the Florida Citrus Bowl in Orlando with Florida State prevailing, 44-7. TRAVEL PLANS - Wake Forest will fly to Tallahassee on Friday evening and will not practice at Doak Campbell Stadium prior to the game. Team headquarters is the Ramada Inn (904-877-3171). LAST YEAR'S GAME - The nationally 3rd-ranked Seminoles were without injured starting quarterback Thad Busby, but backup Dan Kendra completed 20 of 39 passes for 281 yards and three TDs to leads FSU past Wake Forest, 44-7, last November 9th in the Citrus Bowl. The Demon Deacons turned in a respectable performance, particularly on defense where they limited the 'Noles to 402 yards in total offense and just 121 yards on the ground, but could not complement that effort on the offensive side with only 186 yards of total offense themselves. All-American Warrick Dunn, who was limited to 57 yards on 15 carries, scored twice in the first period to give his team a 14-0 lead. Wake responded with a stunning 80-yard touchdown run by Morgan Kane, the 5th-longest run in school history, to pull within 14-7, but the Seminoles added two more TDs on Kendra passes in the second period to pull away. Kane's run was the only bright spot offensively all day for the Deacs. Quarterback Brian Kuklick threw for a season-low 116 yards (15-of-27) and was sacked four times. THE DEACS LAST WEEK - Wake Forest made its first game with Rutgers a successful one this past Saturday as the Demon Deacons recorded a 28-14 victory over the winless (0-10) Scarlet Knights. The win featured the running of senior Herman Lewis (129 yards on 36 carries), new starting quarterback Ben Sankey (14-of-20 for 158 yards), and a stout defense that came up with four turnovers and shutout Rutgers in the second half. Wake jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first period on a 16-yard run by Lewis and a one-yard sneak by Sankey, who was playing in place of the injured Brian Kuklick. When Matthew Burdick added a 32-yard field goal, set up by Robert Fatzinger's fumble recovery, it appeared that the Deacs would cruise to the "W". Rutgers rallied, though, with two quick touchdown passes by quarterback Mike McMahon to make the score, 17-14, at halftime. That would be all the offense for the Scarlet Knights, however, as a revived Deacon defensive unit allowed only 35 yards in total offense the entire second half and sacked McMahon three times. Burdick kicked his second field goal, then D'Angelo Solomon turned in a big play with a 39-yard interception return to set up Lewis' second touchdown that ended the day's scoring with 0:21 left in the third quarter.
COMMENTS from COACH JIM CALDWELL(On the win at Rutgers) - "I was very proud of our football team and very pleased to come away with a win over a talented young Rutgers team. We were playing on the road, without our starting quarterback, and with three starters in our defensive line having practiced little or not at all during the week. Except for a lapse in the second quarter, it was a great effort by our defense. Not only did they shut Rutgers out in the second half, but they also came up with four turnovers during the ballgame, three of which led to scores. Our offense did a good job of controlling the ball and putting points on the board when we needed them." (On Florida State) - "If there were ever any doubts regarding the ability of this Florida State team, they were undoubtedly put to rest with its performance on Saturday. This has been a team that has improved steadily all season and seems to be peaking at the right time. I certainly do not see a better football team in the country than Florida State. It will be a significant challenge for our team to play them this week in Tallahassee, but we are excited about the opportunity." NOTING THE DEMON DEACONS SO LONG SENIORS - Wake Forest has 13 seniors playing their final regular season game as Demon Deacons this Saturday. Heading that group are the 1997 squad's captains--wide receiver THABITI DAVIS, defensive end ROBERT FATZINGER, center CHRIS GASKELL and defensive back D'ANGELO SOLOMON. Other senior starters are guard TARIS CLARK, running back HERMAN LEWIS, linebacker DAVID ZADEL and safety TERRENCE SUBER. Additional seniors are CHAD ALEXANDER, PATRICK DEPENBROCK, ALJAMONT JOYNER (a starter at defensive tackle until injured), MYLES SAVAGE and KAI SNEAD, TELEVISION AGAIN - The 1997 season has seen Wake Forest enjoy unprecedented television coverage. With this week's game at Florida State being carried on the ACC/JP Sports network, nine of 11 dates on the '97 schedule have been televised. Prior to this year, the most TV games that the Demon Deacons have ever played in a single season was five (1984). Wake's September 25th win over N.C.State was the first nationally televised (ESPN) regular season game in school history. The season-opener against Northwestern was carried on a regional basis by ABC; four games (Virginia, UNC, Duke & Clemson) have been shown on the ACC/JP Sports network throughout the Southeast; the contest at East Carolina was televised by Fox Sports South; and last week's game at Rutgers was carried on the Big East network. DEACS VS THE BEST - Wake Forest has faced the #1 team in the country five times in its history, the last being on its 1995 trip to Tallahassee. Here's that list: Wake Forest vs #1 October 14, 1995 at Florida State L 13-72 October 30, 1993 at Florida State L 0-54 October 20, 1990 Virginia L 14-49 October 2, 1976 at Michigan L 0-31 October 8, 1955 at Maryland L 7-28 The highest-ranked opponent that the Demon Deacons have ever defeated was #4 Tennessee 51 years ago when Wake jouneyed to Knoxville on October 26, 1946 and won,19-6. Since that time, the Deacs have lost 34 straight to teams ranked in the Top Ten, including a 30-12 loss at then-#5 North Carolina earlier this season. BEST SINCE '92 - Wake Forest already has compiled its best season mark in head coach Jim Caldwell's five years at the school. The Demon Deacons have five wins for the first time since 1992 when that year's club put together a 7-4 regular season record and went on to defeat Oregon in the Independence Bowl. That '92 campaign is the only other time in nine years (since 1988) that Wake Forest has won more than three games in a season. It's also been five years (1992) since the Demon Deacons have won three games in ACC play. Wake Forest, which is 3-4 in the league entering this week's matchup with Florida State, finished with a 4-4 mark in conference competition in '92. Remarkably, that is the only season until now since 1988 that a Deacon squad has defeated more than one ACC opponent. Deacon Records since 1988(overall / in ACC) 1989 2-8-1 / 1-6 1992 8-4 / 4-4 1995 1-10 / 0-8 1990 3-8 / 0-7 1993 2-9 / 1-7 1996 3-8 / 1-7 1991 3-8 / 1-6 1994 3-8 / 1-7 1997 5-5 / 3-4 MORE ON THE RUTGERS WIN - Although the final margin was a fairly competitive two touchdowns, Wake Forest was certainly the dominant team in defeating Rutgers this past Saturday, 28-14. Two statistics sup-port that statement dramatically. The Demon Deacons ran 82 offensive plays while the Scarlet Knights offense took only 54 offensive snaps. And in time of possession, the Deacons held a commanding 38:08 to 21:52 advantage. The 54 plays for Rutgers were the fewest by a WFU opponent since Appalachian State had possession for just 52 snaps against the Deacs in 1993 (51 games ago). Wake Forest's 16:16 advantage in time of possession is the largest ever for the Deacons according to available records. DEFENSE SHUTS THE DOOR - For the third time in four games--not surprisingly, all Wake Forest wins--the Demon Deacon defense did not give up a point in the second half in the win over Rutgers. The Deacs held only a three-point edge (17-14) prior to intermission, but finished with a 28-14 victory after their defensive unit surren-dered only 35 yards in total offense (and zero points) in the third and fourth quarters. Earlier, Wake had shutout both Maryland and Duke in the second half of those two wins. Against both the Terrapins and the Scarlet Knights, the Deacon defense registered negative numbers for the opposition rushing attack in the second half as well. Second Half Deacon "D"Opponent Score at Half Final Score Opp 2nd Half Yrds (rush/pass) Maryland 21-17 35-17 123 (-15/138) Duke 24-24 38-24 88 (65/23) Rutgers 17-14 28-14 35 (-31/66) THE DEFENSE OVERALL - Wake Forest has allowed only 343 yards per game this season while giving up slightly over 100 yards per game (103.1) on the ground. Last year, the opposition averaged 476 yards per game in total offense versus the Deacon defense, including 254 yards per outing rushing. In 1996, the Deacons were 105th in the country (of 111 Division I-A schools) in rushing defense, allowing those 254.4 yards per outings. Their improvement this season of 151.3 yards per game in this category is the best in the nation. Wake ranks 15th nationally in rushing defense in 1997. OVERALL STATS - There is a huge test awaiting in Florida State this week, of course, but here's a revealing comparison of total offense, total defense and scoring figures for Wake Forest this season, in 1996, and over the last four years. Getting Better by the Numbers 1997 1996 Difference Best under Caldwell Total Offense 369.9 319.2 +50.7 ypg 352.2 (1993) Scoring Offense 23.8 13.1 +10.7 ppg 18.1 (1993) Total Defense 343.2 475.8 -132.6 ypg 426.1 (1995) Scoring Defense 23.0 34.0 -11.0 ppg 28.9 (1993) TURNOVER TURNAROUND - The overall statistics for 1997 are still not good. Wake Forest has committed 25 turnovers while its opposition has lost the ball via fumbles or interceptions 16 times--that's a negative-9 ratio for the Deacs. Wake has even won twice this year while committing five turnovers in a game. The Deacs managed that accomplishment while defeating both N.C.State and Maryland. However, Wake has not committed a turnover in either of its last two games against Clemson and Rutgers. That effort versus the Tigers two weeks ago marked the first time this season that the Deacons had gone an entire game without a turnover. And this past week against Rutgers, the turnaround truly went in Wake Forest's direction as the Deacons forced four turnovers (3 interceptions, 1 fumble) on the part of the Scarlet Knights. Three of those turnovers led to 17 points for the Wake Forest offense, too. OFFENSE IS BETTER, TOO - With quarterback BRIAN KUKLICK at the controls the Wake Forest offense appeared headed toward an outstanding year. Sophomore BEN SANKEY is now calling signals, but the Deacons still have a chance to finish with some very impressive figures on that side of the ball. One school record is on the line this week. Demon Deacon quarterbacks have completed 61.3% of their passes this season (223 of 364). The WFU record for completion percentage in one season is 60.6% set in 1981. The Wake Forest offense is also averaging 369.9 yards per game. That is the best by a Deacon team since the 1989 squad compiled 383.4 yards per contest. SPEAKING OF RECORDS - Two Demon Deacon individual performers also have a chance at school single season records this week. Junior wide receiver DESMOND CLARK has 66 receptions this fall. That matches James Brim's total in 1986 and is two short of the Wake Forest all-time record of 68 catches by Marlon Estes in 1995. Sophomore placekicker MATTHEW BURDICK has booted 15 field goals this season (in 22 tries). The WFU record in that department is 16 set by Wilson Hoyle in 1987. Burdick also needs just one more successful extra point conversion to record the 2nd-best season ever in that category. The Winston-Salem product is currently 23-of-23 on PATs. Only Hoyle in 1987, when he went 34-for-34, has been perfect more often. THABITI IN THE RECORDBOOKS - Demon Deacon senior wide receiver THABITI DAVIS moved into 2nd place on the school's all-time receiving list this past Saturday at Rutgers with five receptions (for 48 yards). Davis now has 156 receptions for his career--three more than James Brim (153), who previously had ranked #2 on the WFU career receiving list. The all-time leader for the Deacons is Ricky Proehl with 188. Davis also is now among the all-time top ten receivers in ACC history. His 156 career catches have him 8th on that prestigious list as he enters his final regular season game this Saturday. DESMOND CLARK is 2nd with 66 receptions (6.6 per game), followed by JAMMIE DEESE who is 4th with 52. THABITI DAVIS has 44 catches, which is good enough to tie for 7th in the league. Wake Forest kickoff return specialist MYLES SAVAGE is 1st in the ACC in that department, averaging 27.4 yards per return, while placekicker MATTHEW BURDICK is 2nd in field goal productivity with 15 (1.5 per game). Quarterback BRIAN KUKLICK is 2nd in the ACC in passing yardage with his 242.4 yards per game average and 3rd in total offense (236.9 ypg). ON THE NATIONAL SCENE - Four Demon Deacons are ranked among the top 25 individuals in America in various categories, topped by MYLES SAVAGE, who is 11th in the country in kickoff returns (27.4 ypr) and MATTHEW BURDICK, who is 11th in field goal production (15 / 1.5 per game). DESMOND CLARK, who had been 9th in the country in receiving before catching just three passes last Saturday at Rutgers, is now 13th in that category with his 66 catches (6.6 per game). Injured quarterback BRIAN KUKLICK remains 25th in total offense (236.9 ypg). DEACON AIR ATTACK - He's likely lost for the season after sustaining a hairline fracture in his right leg in the first quarter of the Clemson game two weeks ago, but the accomplishments of Wake Forest quarterback BRIAN KUKLICK are still worth noting. Kuklick passed for more than 250 yards in six of the eight complete games he played this season, and for 235-or-more in seven outings. His top single game performance was a career-high 330-yard outing versus Maryland (on 26 of 41 passes). The Hatboro, PA junior is already in 3rd place on the all-time WFU passing list with 5,334 career yards, That career figure is good enough for 16th on the ACC career chart as well. Kuklick is also now 4th on the Wake recordbook in pass completions and TD passes. The sophomore from Chicago completed 14 of 20 passes for 158 yards. He did not throw for a touchdown but did not have an interception either. Sankey also contributed with his running ability, scoring the Deacs' second TD on a one-yard plunge, then capping the day's scoring by running for a two-point conversion. GROUND GAME - Running back HERMAN LEWIS went over the 100-yard mark for the second time this season with a hard-earned 129 yards at Rutgers. Lewis, who gained 160 yards in the win at Duke, carried the ball 36 times versus the Scarlet Knights--that equals the 5th-highest single game total in Wake history (see below). In the last 15 years only John Leach, who ran the ball 46 times in setting an ACC rushing record of 329 yards against Maryland in 1993, has carried the ball more times for the Deacs. Four of the Deacon interior linemen played all 82 snaps at Rutgers--center CHRIS GASKELL, guard SAM SETTAR, and tackles JEFF FLOWE and BRIAN WOLVERTON. The only reserve to see action was WILLIE LAM at one guard spot, who relieved TARIS CLARK late in the game. SOLOMON COMPLETING TERRIFIC CAREER - Senior cornerback D'ANGELO SOLOMON has turned in an outstanding 1997 season and he's rarely been better than he has the past three weeks. On October 25th at Duke, Solomon recovered a Blue Devil fumble in the first quarter to set up one Wake Forest scoring drive, then with the score tied at 24-24 in the fourth period, deflected a pass that was picked off by teammates DAVID ZADEL--a play that put the Deacon offense in position to drive for the go-ahead score. On November 1st against Clemson, he recorded a team-high 13 tackles, including a career-high 11 unassisted stops. This past Saturday in the victory at Rutgers, Solomon made 6 tackles, including one for a loss. He also broke up two passes and intercepted another, returning it 39 yards in perhaps the key play of the entire game. His "pick" came with the Deacons holding a 20-14 lead, but his long runback set up a short touchdown drive that gave Wake a comfortable margin. Solomon, who ranks 3rd on the team in tackles with 63, should make his 34th consecutive start for Wake Forest this Saturday, a streak of durability and excellence that extends back to the final game of the 1994 schedule (his true freshman year) at Georgia Tech. For More on D'Angelo Solomon, Please See the Back of This Week's Depth Chart Page GETTING THEIR PICKS - Three Demon Deacons came through with interceptions at Rutgers, with two of those "picks" leading to Wake Forest touchdown drives. Junior DAMEON DANIEL collected his first career "INT" in the first quarter after linebacker DUSTIN LYMAN deflected a Rutgers pass. Daniel returned the ball 39 yards to set up the second Deacon TD of the day. Wake's other corner, D'ANGELO SOLOMON, also had a 39-yard interception return which led to another touch-down in the third quarter. The third interception came from an unlikely source when tackle DA'VAUGHN MELLERSON caught a short pass by the Rutgers quarterback late in the game. According to Mellerson, a sophomore from Baltimore, it was the first interception of his career -- on any level. LINEBACKERS LYMAN & MOSES STILL ATOP TACKLE CHART - The outstanding linebacking duo of sophomore DUSTIN LYMAN and junior KELVIN MOSES are one-two at the top of the Wake Forest tackle list again this week. Lyman has 85 tackles to rank first on the squad, while Moses is close behind with 81. Lyman also is tops on the squad in tackles for loss (9--tied with FRED ROBBINS and KELVIN SHACKLEFORD), sacks (7) and pass breakups (7). MOSES AMONG TOP DOZEN "HIT MEN" - He's still just a junior, but linebacker KELVIN MOSES has already topped the 300-tackle figure for his Wake Forest career. The Hartsville, SC native presently ranks 11th in school history with 313 career stops and needs just six tackles this week at Florida State to enter the all-time top ten before the 1997 season concludes. Demon Deacon Hit List(total tackles) (1) Ed Stetz 460 (7) Jimmie Simmons 346 (2) Carlos Bradley 438 (8) Marc Hester 331 (3) Kevin Giles 412 (9) Lamont Scales 320 (4) Bill Armstrong 402 (10)Rory Holt 319 (5) Ernie Purnsley 385 (11)KELVIN MOSES 313 (6) Reggie McCummings 374 THE SACK IS BACK - The 1997 Demon Deacons have 26 sacks this season--that's twice their total in 1996. In fact, the current figure is the highest at Wake Forest since the 1992 team was credited with 41 sacks. The individual leader in that department is linebacker DUSTIN LYMAN with seven, followed by tackles FRED ROBBINS and KELVIN SHACKLEFORD and linebacker KELVIN MOSES with four apiece. MOORE EARNS SPOT AS ONE OF ACC'S BEST - Demon Deacon punter TRIPP MOORE continued his fine 1997 play at Rutgers, averaging 45.3 yards per punt on three kicks. The Wake Forest specialist is now averaging 41.6 yards per punt this season--that's the best by a Deacon punter in nine seasons (1988) when Martin Bailey averaged 43.7 yards per punt. In the last six games, Moore has averaged over 44 yards per punt three times and been above his season average (of 41.6) on five occasions. He also has been extremely effective with "hang time", allowing his teammates to surround opposing return men before they have the opportunity for long runbacks. Only 18 of Moore's 43 punts have been returned, and the opposition has averaged just 3.7 yards per return on those 18 tries. DEACS FROM FLORIDA - Ten members of the '97 Wake Forest squad who list Florida as their home state will be making the visit to Tallahassee this weekend. Eight of the 10 are on this week's "two-deep" and another is a key special teams player. That group is highlighted by 1996 All-ACC (2nd team) wide receiver DESMOND CLARK (Lakeland/ Kathleen HS) and one of the team's top defensive players, tackle FRED ROBBINS (Pensacola/Gonzalez HS). Other Floridians likely to see action versus the Seminoles include running back KITO GARY (Miami/ Columbus HS), linebackers ABDUL GUICE (Rockledge/Rockledge HS) and JON MANNON (Destin/Fort Walton Beach HS), fullback WANDE SHAW (Plant City/Plant City HS), receiver KAI SNEAD (Miami/Columbus HS), and linebacker BEN STAFFORD (Ft.Lauderdale/St.Thomas Aquinas HS) who plays primarily on special teams. Also on the travel squad are reserve offensive linemen ALARIC THIESHEN (Brooksville/Central HS) and JOHN WHITEHEAD (Port Richey (Hudson HS). |
