Vaughn In The Lead After Day 1 Of Deacon Combined Events Classic ![]() Senior Alex Gove May 11, 2010 WINSTON-SALEM, NC - Wake Forest senior Caroline Vaughn recorded a pair of personal-bests on Tuesday and currently leads the women's heptathlon after the opening day of the Deacon Combined Events Classic at Kentner Stadium. Vaughn notched a total of 3,176 points on the first day and holds a 26-point edge on Charleston Southern's Patria Norman. Wake Forest senior Alex Gove, who is competing in her first career heptathlon, recorded 2,865 points and is currently sixth. Freshman Gwen Ricco is ninth after the first day with 2,808 points while her sister Maddy is 10th with 2,663 points. Vaughn started the day with a solid run in the 100m hurdles, winning her heat and the event with a time of 13.59. She then cleared a personal-best 5-06.50 in the high jump to finish third in that event and earn 842 points. The Alpharetta, Ga., native slipped back to fourth in the standings after a toss of 26-04.25 in the shot put but regained the lead with a personal-best 24.90 in the 200m dash. This is just Vaughn's second career heptathlon. She finished sixth last year at the this event. Gove started out with a 14.48 in the 100m hurdles and then had a high jump of 4-07.25. She moved into eighth place after a shot put toss of 33-03.75 and then closed the day by winning her heat of the 200m dash in a personal-best time of 25.07. Gwen Ricco got her day off to a good start with a 14.73 in the 100m hurdles, which was her second-best time this season. She then cleared 4-07.25 in the high jump and posted a mark of 32-02.00 in the shot. Gwen finished the day second in her heat of the 200 dash with a time of 25.07. Maddy Ricco also had a solid start to the meet on Tuesday. She ran a 15.36 in the 100m hurdles and then tied her sister and Gove by clearing 4-07.25 in the high jump. After recording a mark of 31-10.00 in the shot put, she finished the day sixth in the 200m dash with a time of 25.69. On the men's side, Canada's Jamie Adjety-Nelson leads the way halfway through the decathlon after amassing a total of 4,254 points. Eric Broadent is second after clearing a meet record 6-11.75 in the high jump. Broadent currently has 4,113 points. Seven-time All-American Chris Helwick will start the second day in third place with 3,921 points. The men's 110m hurdles will kick-off the second day of action at 1 pm on Wednesday. The women's heptathlon will resume with the long jump beginning at 2:30 pm. |
