WAKE SELECTED TO HOST NCAA REGIONAL
The Wake Forest women's tennis team, currently ranked thirdnationally by
the ITA, has been selected to host one of the 16 NCAA Regionals. The
Deacons will take on the Virginia Tech Hokies in the second match of the
first round on Saturday, May 13. The 10 a.m. match will be between the
San Diego State Aztecs and the South Florida Bulls.
UP NEXT
The team that survives the four-team regional will advance to the Round of
16. The Round of 16 and all the remaining rounds will be held at Pepperdine
University in Malibu, CA. The winner of this regional will face the winner
from the regional hosted by William & Mary. The four teams in that regional
are: William & Mary, Loyola (Md.), Tennessee and Princeton.
RECORD VERSUS REGIONAL TEAMS
Virginia Tech-- Wake Forest leads the all-time series with Virginia Tech
13-2. The two teams first met in 1979. The Hokies were the Deacs' first
round opponent in the 1999 NCAA Tournament, with Wake winning 5-0 in
Columbia, SC.
South Florida--
The Bulls are the only team of the three coming to
Winston-Salem the Deacons have already played this season. Wake and South
Florida met on March 9 in Tampa with the Deacs coming out on top 9-0. Wake
leads the all-time series 5-1, with the first meeting coming in 1987.
San Diego State--
Wake Forest and San Diego State have never met in women's
tennis.
WFU AGAINST THE 2000 NCAA TOURNAMENT FIELD
Twenty of the 23 matches the women's tennis team has played so far this
season have been against teams in the 2000 NCAA Tournament. The Deacs are
18-2 against those teams. Those teams include seven of the schools selected
to host regionals. The only three schools the Deacs played this year who
are not in the tournament were N.C. State, Maryland and Virginia.
WAKE SENDS THREE TO INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS
Three individual members and one doubles duo from the Wake Forest women's
tennis team will compete in the NCAA Individual and Doubles Championships.
Sophomore Janet Bergman and freshmen Adria Engel and Bea Bielik will each
compete in the singles competition and Bergman and Bielik will also team up
for the doubles competition. Both the singles and doubles championships
will be held at the Ralph-Straus Tennis Center on the campus of Pepperdine
University, May 22-26.
WAKE COMPLETES 10TH STRAIGHT WINNING SEASON
With the completion of the 2000 season, the women's tennis team will have
completed its 10th straight winning season. The streak is the longest in
the program's history. The previous streak was five straight from 1985-89.
DEACS EARN SEVENTH NCAA BID IN A ROW
The Wake Forest women's tennis team will be competing in its seventh
straight NCAA Tournament this weekend. The lowest ranking the Deacons have
finished a season in that time is 17th. The team is currently ranked third
by the ITA, and has been ranked as high as second. Stanford is ranked No.
1, followed by Georgia at No. 2.
DEACS COMPLETE FIRST PERFECT ACC SEASON
The women's tennis team recently closed out the regular season for the year
2000. With a victory over Virginia in the regular season's final match, the
Deacs finished, for the first time in school history, with a perfect 8-0
record in the ACC. It was the first ACC regular season championship in the
program's history as well.
WAKE FALLS JUST SHORT IN ACC FINAL
For the sixth year in a row, the Wake Forest Demon Deacons and the Duke
Blue Devils met in the ACC Championship final. The match was close all the
way. The teams split the six singles matches. Wake won matches at the Nos.
2, 3 and 5 positions. Freshman Bea Bielik defeated Kathy Sell 3-6, 6-3, 6-1
at No. 2. Sophomore Janet Bergman won at No. 3, defeating Katie Granson
6-4, 6-2 and Jackie Houston defeated Hillary Adams 7-6 (2), 6-4 at No. 5.
The match was settled with doubles play, with Duke taking the first two
matches to give it the 5-3 victory.
WAKE IN THE ITA RANKINGS
Wake Forest has spent the majority of the 2000 season in the top 10 of the
ITA's national rankings. The team has been ranked as high as No. 2, the
highest ranking in school history, and are ranked third in the ITA's latest
poll.
ENGEL CLOSING IN ON WFU RECORD
Freshman Adria Engel, who already owns the WFU record for most singles wins
by a freshman, is closing in on the record for most singles win in a
season. Engel currently has 41 wins this season. The all-time Wake Forest
record is 43 set last season by then-sophomore Mariel Verban.
WFU PLAYERS EARN FLIGHT CHAMPIONSHIPS
One Wake Forest singles player and one doubles duo earned ACC Flight
Championships for the 2000 season. Sophomore Janet Bergman was named flight
champion for the No. 3 position. Bergman holds a record of 19-2 in dual
matches this season, including a 13-0 at No. 3. She was 5-0 at No. 3
against ACC competition during the regular season. Bergman was joined by
freshman Bea Bielik as the flight champions for the No. 1 doubles position.
The duo was 7-0 against ACC competition at No. 1 this season and they were
12-0 overall at No. 1 for the year.
WAKE SWEEPS ACC HONORS
The women's tennis team swept the ACC honors for the 2000 season. Freshman
Adria Engel was named both Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. This
marks the third consecutive season a Wake Forest player has been named
Rookie of the Year. Head coach Brian Fleishman, in his first full season as
head coach, was chosen as the ACC's Coach of the Year. This is only the
fourth time the women's tennis Coach of the Year has come from Wake Forest.
Joining Engel on the All-ACC team were sophomore Janet Bergman and freshman
Bea Bielik.
HEAD COACH BRIAN FLEISHMAN
Brian Fleishman is in his first full season as the head coach of the Wake
Forest women's tennis team. Fleishman was promoted to head coach from
assistant at mid-season last year and directed the Deacs to a 10-5 record
and the second round of the NCAA Regional at South Carolina. This year, his
team completed an 18-1 regular season, the best in school history. The
Deacs were also 8-0 in ACC play for the first time in school history. The
team reached the finals of the ACC Championships and currently stands at
21-2 heading into the NCAA Tournament. For his efforts, Fleishman was named
ACC Coach of the Year.
Individual Updates
Adria Engel (5-7, Fr., Glen Ellen, IL)
Was named ACC Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year...has compiled a
record of 41-9 overall and 6-0 against ACC competition...her 41 wins are
the most ever by a freshman at Wake Forest and are just two wins away from
the record for most wins in a season by any Wake forest player ...posted a
record of 14-5 at No. 1 singles in dual match play this spring... enters
the NCAA Tournament as the nation's fifth-ranked player by the ITA...
became the first freshman ever to reach the finals of the All-American
Championships in the fall ...won the ACC Indoors singles
championship...after losing her first match, she won 14 matches in a row
before losing to the nation's No. 1 player, Zuzana Lesanarova of San Diego,
in the finals of the All-American Championships.
Bea Bielik (6-0, Fr., Valley Stream, NY)
Was named to the 2000 All-ACC Team... has an overall record of 26-2 in her
first season of collegiate tennis...is currently ranked 19th by the
ITA...posted a perfect 21-0 record in dual matches this spring... played
most of the spring at No. 2 singles shere she was 12-0... advanced to the
quarterfinals of the ACC Indoors where she lost to teammate Adria Engel...
was 3-0 in three matches at No. 1 singles...comes into the tournament
having won 21 consecutive matches.
Janet Bergman (5-6, So. Pinehurst, NC)
Selected to the 2000 All-ACC team... is currently ranked 40th in the ITA
poll... compiled a 36-7 overall record...was 19-2 in dual matches,
including 7-0 against ACC competition...named ACC Flight Champion at No. 3
singles...has won seven matches in a row and 16 of her last 17.
Maren Haus (5-8, So. Brielle, NJ)
Compiled a record of 22-15 overall and 3-4 in the ACC... played mostly at
the No. 4 position where she was 9-8 on the season... also played at Nos. 3
and 5 spots... was 2-1 in the 2000 ACC Tournament, gaining wins over North
Carolina and Florida State.
Jackie Houston (5-9, Jr., King Mountain, NC)
Currently has a record of 25-7 overall and was 4-2 against ACC
competition...is ranked 85th by the ITA... has won 10 of her last 12
matches... is 3-1 against ranked opponents this season... played mainly at
the No. 5 spot, with occasional starts at the No. 4 position.
Annemarie Milton (5-10, Sr., Palm Beach Gardens, FL)
Is the only senior on the 2000 Wake Forest squad... completed the regular
season with a record of 24-9 and 7-0 in the ACC...had won seven straight
matches before losing to Duke's Prim Siripipat in the ACC finals...
including the ACC Championships, has a record of 26-10... has played mostly
at the No. 6 spot in the lineup.
Lea Miller (5-7, So., Gainesville, GA)
Has a record of 9-6 for the 2000 season... is 2-1 in dual matches, all at
the No. 6 spot... reached third round of the William & Mary Invitational in
the fall, before falling to teammate Jackie Houston... reached
quarterfinals of ACC Indoors.
Mariel Verban (5-6, Jr., Bloomington, IL)
Was ranked No. 4 in pres-season ITA poll... posted record of 7-3 in the
fall before before injuring foot... was 5-2 against ranked opponents before
injury... has received a red-shirt for the 2000 season.
