Adam Scheier is in his second season on the Wake Forest football staff after coaching under head coach Dave Clawson at Bowling Green.
Scheier officially joined the Demon Deacons in January 2014 after serving as Bowling Green’s interim head coach in the Little Caesars Pizza Bowl against Pittsburgh.
In his first season at Wake Forest, Scheier mentored tight end Cam Serigne, who led the club in receptions, set a school record for receptions by a tight end, and earned Freshman All-America honors. Scheier worked extensively with punter Alex Kinal, who was a second team All-ACC selection.
Scheier’s special teams were also outstanding in 2014, finishing fourth in the nation in net punting, 13th nationally in kickoff coverage and third in the ACC in punt return average. Placekicker Mike Weaver set a school record by converting his first 10 career field goal attempts.
Scheier served as Bowling Green’s special teams coordinator and tight ends coach from 2009-13. Scheier’s special teams were among the best in the Mid-American Conference, blocking 16 kicks and returning three kickoffs and four punts for touchdowns. He had five special teams players earn All-MAC honors on six occasions.
In 2013, Bowling Green was the only team in the Mid-American Conference to return a punt for a touchdown, which they did on two occasions. The team finished the season tops in the MAC and fourth in the nation in punt return average. The Falcons also led the MAC in kick off return average and finished 14th in the country.
His tight ends were one of the most dynamic aspects of the Falcon offense, proving valuable in both the run and pass game. Tight end Alex Bayer, a third team All-MAC performer, was second on the team with 34 receptions. Scheier produced All-MAC tight ends on three occasions, with Jimmy Scheidler (2009 second team) and Alex Bayer (2012 second team and 2013 third team) both being recognized during his tenure.
In 2012 BGSU returned one punt for a score and finished third in the MAC in punt return average (10.7). BGSU added a pair of blocked kicks in the Falcons' 26-14 win at Ohio, live on ESPN2 and blocked one punt versus San Jose State in the Military Bowl.
Punter Brian Schmiedebusch earned second-team All-MAC honors and was named the National Punter of the Week following an effort at Ohio in which he had five straight punts of over 50 yards. That followed a 2011 campaign that saw Schmiedebusch earn All-MAC honors, finish sixth in the nation in punting and helped the Falcons finish fifth nationally as a team in net punting.
A 1995 graduate of Dartmouth with a degree in psychology, Scheier was a four-year letterman for the Big Green and earned special teams player of the year honors as a senior. He began his coaching career immediately following graduation, assisting with the Dartmouth secondary in 1996. He spent three years at Columbia, coaching the strong safeties and outside linebackers while earning a master's degree in education.
Scheier moved to Princeton in 2000 where he spent two years coaching wide receivers and special teams. In 2002 he started a seven-year stint coordinating the special teams at Lehigh. In addition, Scheier coached the running backs for his first three years and the wide receivers in his final four seasons. He moved to Bowling Green prior to the start of the 2009 season.
Scheier and his wife Erica have three daughters, Callie, Riley, and Maddie, and one son, Brady.
