Devin Santana joined head coach Dave Clawson’s staff as a defensive quality control coach for the spring of 2020.
Santana joins the Demon Deacons after spending one season as a defensive quality control coach at Alabama State University, working closely with the safeties. During his lone season in Montgomery, the Hornets defense finished fifth in FCS in passing yards allowed per game, averaging 167.2 yards per game.
In addition, Alabama State ranked inside of the top 25 in first down defense, passing efficiency defense and tackles for loss per game in 2019.
Before joining the Hornets’ staff, Santana was a standout defensive lineman and captain. Santana played three seasons at Alabama State, appearing in 27 games. He enjoyed his best year during his junior campaign when he played in 11 games at both, defensive end and defensive tackle. He recorded 33 total tackles, including 18 solo stops: while also recording 5.5 tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks and a pair of forced fumbles.
A 2018 graduate, Santana earned his undergraduate degree in interdisciplinary studies at Alabama State while also pursuing a master’s degree in education.
During his time in Montgomery, Santana was chosen to receive the Elite 11 Award. The award is given to a player who exemplifies leadership qualities of a true student-athlete. The recipient of this award displays mental and physical toughness throughout all workout sessions while making exceptional gains and showing on-field competitiveness.
