Dr. Brian Waterman is a board-certified orthopaedic sports medicine surgeon and Team Physician for Wake Forest University Athletics. He specializes in care of throwing shoulder and elbow care, cartilage restoration, joint preservation, and complex knee injuries, providing surgical and non-surgical care for student-athletes across all sports.

Dr. Waterman is Chief and Fellowship Director of Sports Medicine and Professor of Orthopaedic Surgery at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. Also, he is the Secretary of the Arthroscopy Association of North America, on the editorial board for Arthroscopy Journal, Video Journal of Sports Medicine, and Journal of Cartilage and Joint Preservation. Joint appointments at Wake Forest Institute of Regenerative Medicine and Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences.

Fellowship-trained at Rush University, he is currently team physician for Wake Forest University Athletics, Mount Tabor High School, and the Winston-Salem Dash. He has previously served as a team physician for the Chicago Bulls, Chicago White Sox, Chicago Fire and U.S. Ski & Snowboard. A 13-year U.S. Army veteran, he brings leadership, discipline, and a performance-driven approach to athlete care. He is an internationally recognized researcher with more than 300 peer-reviewed publications, advancing the science of sports medicine and injury prevention.

Through Wake Forest Sports Medicine and Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, Dr. Waterman helps ensure Wake Forest student-athletes receive world-class care rooted in innovation, collaboration, and competitive excellence.
