WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Trina Maso de Moya had a game-high 20 kills as Wake Forest defeated Duke 3-0 Friday evening at Reynolds Gym in the team's third straight ACC win.
Maso de Moya led the offensive charge in the first game, which was deadlocked at 7-7, until the Demon Deacons scored seven unanswered points. Wake Forest wrapped up the game 15-12, despite a comeback by Duke, who pulled to within 14-12.
The Deacons had a .429 attack percentage in the second game, and forced five Duke errors to win 15-7. The third game came much easier for Wake, finishing the match with a 15-4 game-three win. The Deacons held the Blue Devils to a .061 attack percentage, while registering 17 kills.
As a team, Wake recorded 54 kills for the match, while Duke had 41. Maso de Moya, a sophomore outside hitter, led the Deacons with 20 kills. Senior outside hitter Katie Horne registered 12. Dominique Philipp had a team-high 11 kills for the Blue Devils. Junior setter Julie Cowley assisted on 23 kills until leaving the match with an injury in the second game. Freshman Ashlee Phillips took her spot and registered 21 assists. Pamela Gottfred led Duke with 30.
Wake Forest improves to 17-5 overall and 5-3 in the ACC. The Deacons travel to Statesboro, GA, Sunday, October 7 to take on Georgia Southern. Wake returns to conference play Tuesday, with a road match versus Virginia.
