Wake Volleyball Downs Duke In Five Sets

DURHAM, N.C. - The Wake Forest volleyball team defeated Duke 3-2 in a five-set thriller Tuesday evening in Durham, NC.
The Blue Devils opened the match with a 15-8 game-one win after holding the Demon Deacons to a .175 attack percentage, but Wake responded by winning games two and three, 15-11, 15-5. Duke dominated game four, however, winning by the score of 15-6, before succumbing to the Deacons, who won the decisive game five, 19-17. Wake recorded nine errors in the fourth game, while forcing only one Duke miscue.
The Deacs were paced by senior outside hitter Sharon Harmsworth's 22 kills and .373 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Katie Horne contributed 18 kills while sophomore middle blocker Margaret Davidson added 17 kills. Setter Julie Cowley had 78 assists for the Demon Deacons. Sophomore outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya continued her balanced attack, recording her second double-double in the past two matches with 13 kills and 24 digs.
The Blue Devils were led by senior Dominique Philipp, who smashed a match-high 24 kills and recorded a .358 hitting percentage. Sophomore Dorrette Burwell added 17 kills, and sophomore setter Pamela Gottfred registered 64 assists.
Wake Forest improves to 20-6 overall and 7-4 in the ACC. The Deacs continue their conference road swing with a Halloween match at Florida State.
