Deacon Women's Tennis Team Competes In Two Tournaments

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C.- The Wake Forest women's tennis team competed in tournaments at both North Carolina and South Carolina Friday, Oct. 1 through Sunday, Oct. 3.
At the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C. sophomore Janet Bergman and junior Mariel Verban faced off in the finals of the Flight A singles competition. Bergman came out on top, winning 6-3, 6-3. Wake Forest also had the third place finisher in Flight A in freshman Bea Bielik who defeated Mejia from North Carolina 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 to capture third place. Senior Annemarie Milton finished fourth in the Flight B singles competition, losing in the third-place match to Zalinski of UNC 0-6, 0-6.
In the doubles competition at Chapel Hill, two Wake Forest duos were to face off for the championship, but decided not to play the match. The two teams were Bergman and Milton and Verban and Bielik.
At South Carolina, freshman Adria Engel won the Flight A singles competition by defeating Julia Scaringe of Florida 6-4, 6-3. Junior Jackie Houston won the Flight B singles championship, defeating Lynn Yin Tan of South Carolina 6-2, 6-2.
In doubles competition, Houston and Lea Miller placed third in the Flight B doubles bracket.
