Women's Tennis Compete At ITA Regional

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Freshman Adria Engel and sophomore Janet Bergman of the Wake Forest women's tennis team each advanced to the semifinals of the ITA Southeast Regional held at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center November 4-8.
Engel advanced by defeating Ana Rojas of Winthrop 6-0, 6-0 in the first round. In the second round, Engel defeated Amy Trefethen of Kentucky 6-0, 6-2. Anne Plesinger of Vanderbilt was next for Engel. She defeated Plesinger 6-0, 6-2, and then defeated Alison Ojeda of Tennessee 6-3, 6-4 before losing in the semifinals to eventual champion Kathy Sell of Duke 3-6, 3-6.
Bergman defeated Mirva Maenpaq of High Point in the first round of the regional 6-3, 6-2. She then defeated Jill Buckley of Kentucky 6-2, 6-7, 6-3. In the round of 16, Bergman defeated Ioana Plesu of Duke 7-6, 6-3. In the quarterfinals, she defeated Tina Hojnik of Middle Tennessee State 6-1, 4-6, 6-1 to reach the semifinals. Bergman was eliminated in the semifinals by Carmina Giraldo of Clemson 6-3, 3-6, 1-6.
The doubles teams of Bergman and Engel and Maren Haus and Annemarie Milton each reached the semifinals of the doubles bracket.
