ELON COLLEGE, N.C. - Wake Forest's volleyball team proved too tough for Elon College Tuesday evening in a non-conference battle in Elon College, sweeping the Fightin' Christians 3-0 (15-6, 15-7, 15-10).
Sophomore outside hitter Trina Maso De Mayo lead the Demon Deacons by posting 13 kills and Margaret Davidson, a sophomore middle blocker, added 10 kills. Freshman setter Ashlee Phillips and junior setter Julie Cowley set 28 and 15 assists respectively for the Deacs in the win. Senior outside hitters Amber Grahn and Sharon Harmsworth each registered 11 digs.
Defensively, Davidson assisted on seven blocks, while Phillips, Maso de Moya and junior middle blocker Jessica Hood each recorded three block assists apiece. Wake held Elon to a mere .061 hitting percentage in the first game, and .106 for the match. The Deacons, who registered 17 more kills than Elon, finished the match with a .355 hitting percentage.
The Fightin' Christians were led by Eli Mould, who collected 14 kills and 13 digs. Katie Ruoff added seven kills, while Maria DeAngelo and Laura Griffin recorded five kills apiece. Lori Fourtune and Emerald Zemedkun set 19 and 16 assists respectively.
Wake Forest improved to an impressive 22-6 overall record while remaining 8-4 in the ACC. The Deacs will return to conference play on Friday, when they host North Carolina in the team's first home game in six outings. The match is set for 7 p.m.
