CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Wake Forest freshman forward Joline Charlton scored a pair of first half goals to lead the 15th-ranked Demon Deacons to a 4-0 victory over NC State in the quarterfinals of the 1999 Atlantic Coast Conference Women's Soccer Championship on Thursday afternoon in Chapel Hill, NC.
With the victory, the third-seeded Demon Deacons improve to 14-5 overall and advance to the ACC Tournament semifinals on Friday at 6 p.m. where they will face the winner of the #2 Maryland/#7 Duke quarterfinal. NC State concludes it 1999 season with a record of 7-10-2.
Charlton, the 1999 ACC Rookie of the Year, put the Deacs on the scoreboard quickly when she found the back of the net just 59 seconds into the match when she finished a through pass from sophomore Emily Taggart. Charlton added a second goal in the first half at the 29:28 mark when she picked up a loose ball at the top of the penalty box and scored into an empty net.
Sophomore Stacy Roeck made the score 3-0 at the just 2:23 into the second half when she put a header into the net off a direct free kick from senior Anne Shropshire. Freshman Katie Johnson provided the Deacs' final goal of the afternoon at 76:44 in the second half when she scored off a pass from sophomore Sarah Kate Noftsinger.
Wake Forest goalkeepers Erin Regan and Beth Klein teamed to make seven saves an preserve the Demon Deacons' ninth shutout of the season.
