WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest advanced to the second round of the 1999 ACC Field Hockey Tournament with a 6-1 win over North Carolina Friday afternoon at Kentner Stadium on the campus of Wake Forest University.

The Demon Deacons scored four second half goals in the victory. With just over 29 minutes remaining in the first half, Wake Forest's Jennie Shelton scored the opening goal of the game off a rebound from North Carolina goalie Amy Tran to put Wake up 1-0. Jenny Everett's goal with eight minutes left would be all the Deacons needed to put away the Tar Heels, but three minutes later, Carrie Lingo took a tipped ball from Jana Toepel and put it past Wake Forest's Meghan Nitka to bring the score to 2-1.

In the second half, Marlena Reese scored off a pass from Maria Whitehead, stifling any comeback hopes of the North Carolina squad. Shelton would score her second goal of the game two minutes later to put the Deacs up 4-1. Jemima Cameron shot the ball past Tar Heel goalkeeper Nicole Frey with 14:51 remaining, and Shelton would register an assist on the final Wake Forest goal of the game, as she knocked the ball to Samantha Rush with just over eight minutes remaining.

North Carolina outshot the Deacons 9-6 in the first half, but Nitka's seven saves kept the Tar Heels at bay. The Heels were led by Abby Martin, who attempted five shots, while Shelton's four shots led Wake Forest. Nitka recorded a game-high 12 saves, and Tran and Frey registered two saves apiece.

Wake Forest improves to 17-2 overall on the season and will face the Maryland-Virginia winner in the championship on Sunday. North Carolina drops to 15-5.
