Wake Drops Tight Match To North Carolina, 3-2

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - Wake Forest fell in five games to North Carolina Friday evening at Reynolds Gym 3-2. The Tar Heels extended the Demon Deacons in a two and a half hour match and improved to 21-4 overall and 11-1 in the conference.
Wake came out with an early 6-0 lead in the first game, but North Carolina scored seven unanswered points to take a 7-6 lead over the Deacs. Wake Forest was able to rally, however, behind a 23-kill performance in the game to win 15-10. The Tar Heels stormed back in the second game, taking a 4-0 lead to start the game and then went ahead as much as 13-2 before wrapping up the game 15-5. UNC recorded no errors in the game. The third game was a struggle for both teams. The Deacons topped the Heels 7-1 early, but North Carolina evened up the match at 14-14 before succumbing 17-15.
The final two games belonged to the Tar Heels, who won both by scores of 15-9. North Carolina went up 4-0 in both games and Wake Forest had 14 errors to drop its second conference game of its last three outings.
Two Deacons recorded double-doubles on the evening. Sophomore outside hitter Trina Maso de Moya had 23 kills along with 24 digs to lead Wake Forest. Senior outside hitter Katie Horne registered 16 kills and 12 digs. Junior setter Julie Cowley had a match-high 66 assists. North Carolina had 13 team blocks, while the Deacs had seven. Casey Simpson had 25 kills, while Shannon Smith recorded 22 to lead the Tar Heels. Laura Greene had 16 digs, while Simpson and Liz Feldman each recorded 15.
Wake Forest falls to 22-7 overall and 8-5 in ACC play. The Deacons will host NC State in their final regular season home game on Saturday evening at 7 p.m. in Reynolds Gym.
