Aguirre Provides Clincher as Jackets Top Wake Forest

ATLANTA - Georgia Tech sophomore Sergio Aguirre downed Brett Mauro of Wake Forest at No. 5 singles to clinch the 62nd-ranked Yellow Jackets 4-3 win over No. 43 Demon Deacons in Atlantic Coast Conference men's tennis action Saturday at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
Aguirre topped Mauro in three sets, winning 6-3, 2-6, 6-3, as Georgia Tech improved to 9-4 overall and 2-1 in the ACC. The loss evened Wake's record at 10-10, overall and 2-2 in the ACC.
"That was a great win for Sergio," said Tech head coach Kenny Thorne. "He played well and knew the match was on his shoulders. That's what we've been looking for is guys who want to be out there when the match is on the line."
After dropping two of the three doubles matches to lose the doubles point, the Yellow Jackets rallied in singles, winning four straight matches to seal the win. Georgia Tech retired at No. 3 and 4 singles after clinching the match.
"I wasn't pleased with our doubles play, but I was pleased with the way we came back in singles," Thorne said. "I thought we matched up well with them in singles. It came down to the wire, and we were in every match."
Senior Benjamin Cassaigne won the first of Tech's four singles matches, topping 50th-ranked Myles Clouston, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 1. Senior Matt Cozad then won at No. 2 and sophomore Jason Jeong won at No. 6 before Aguirre wrapped up the match at No. 5
Tech will play its second ACC match in as many days on Sunday when the Jackets host 24th-ranked N.C. State at 1 p.m. at the Bill Moore Tennis Center.
