WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Wake Forest men's tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to visiting Illinois Friday evening at the Indoor Tennis Center. The loss moves the Deacons record to 5-3 on the season.
Wake Forest dropped the doubles point, losing all three matches. Wake's standout team of Myles Clouston and Raul Munoz (ranked 32nd in the country) lost at No. 1, 8-3. At No. 2, Billy Gluck and Johan Hansen battled but came up short against Gavin Sontag and Brady Blain 8-6.
The Deacons were close to pulling off an upset due to their gutty effort in singles action. Myles Clouston beat Oliver Freelove (ranked 57th in the nation) at No. 1 4-6, 6-4, 6-4. Michael Berger continued his spectacular play at No. 5, winning his eighth match in nine decisions. Lars Kabiersch pushed Cary Franklin to three sets before falling 6-7, 6-2, 6-3 at No. 2. Raul Munoz and Billy Gluck also dropped three set decisions.
The Demon Deacons return to action Sunday when they host 18th-ranked Virginia Commonwealth at 10 a.m.
